Yes..... my company sent me to the Portland Juneteenth celebration last year to man a booth. Let's just say it was like 80% white people. Also, both of the women who were running for city council were there, and they gave speeches, and their speeches were pretty damn hateful towards white people.
Never heard of it before I googled it this morning. Now I'm wondering why I've never heard of it before now. Seems like a darned good thing to celebrate. Why anyone would try to ruin it with hate speech of any sort, I can't imagine. I could see myself wearing one of these:
I had never heard of it until we moved to Texas and my employer had a Juneteenth luncheon. It's a celebration of the abolition of slavery in 1865 in Texas and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the Confederate states. What absolutely kills me is that all 50 states don't recognize it....or celebrate it anyway. I think something like 45 or so states recognize it.
NSFW. Summa y'all might get mad at this but... Mama's outside, barbecuing ribs and links It's Juneteenth, but to me it don't mean stink It's a day of emancipation, but everybody wonder why Willie ain't celebrating But things ain't perfect I'm looking beyond the surface So instead of drinking beer, and playing Dominoes I'm sitting in the room with my eyes closed
Doesn't it only apply to Texas? Why not celebrate the day Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation by executive order, January 1, 1863, New Year's Day?
This literally proves that y'all don't have much connection to the black man... It's so easy for white people to sit on the sidelines and not give a shit about the levels of racism we deal with daily. MF's don't know what Juneteenth is?? Shameful... I've "celebrated" it my entire life. I've performed at 4 Junteenth Celebrations when I was doing music. Right here in Portland.
Because to know you have to care. You have to reach out to your fellow citizen and give a fuck. Black lives have never mattered in this country and they don't now.
I've never heard about it on tv and I certainly can't imagine how I was supposed to ask one of the few black guys I'm around about this. Hey, I know about MLK day but are there any emancipation holidays I should know about?
