Justin Smoak, the centerpiece of the Seattle Mariners trade of Cliff Lee with Texas a year ago, has had a season of injuries, inconsistencies and disappointment.

But what one swing can do.

Smoak hit his first home run in nearly three months, a two-run shot in the sixth inning, to help the Mariners claim a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals Thursday night.
