Hamilton and Ginobili got "winner" boosts. I don't think any GM in basketball would rather have Hamilton or Ginobili over Roy. Kobe, Wade, TMac and Johnson are the only ones I'd place ahead of Roy. I certainly wouldn't take Iverson ahead of Roy.
The thing about these kinds of lists is that they might not be consistent with what GMs would take, or what we as fans would want... because Iverson might be better for one game (or for the upcoming season) than Roy, but he makes so much more money and is so much older that few, if any GMs, would prefer him to Roy. I think most of us who post here have a longer term perspective than lists like this one that are just a current "snapshot". This is further reinforced for us Blazers fans because we have had precious little to be excited about without a heavy dash of "wait 'til next year" attitude. Of course, personally, I would take Roy over Iverson for the immediate term, too, but I've never been an Iverson fan. Ed O.
AI is an interesting one. He is an amazing scorer, and gets a lot of credit for that. But, if you were picking from that list and wanted to build a winning team, AI wouldn't probably not even be in the top 10.
Actually, I was also approaching this from the perspective of current value. I think Rip and Manu are simply inferior players to Roy. Iverson is a tougher case. He might be more productive, but he does it in a way that's difficult to integrate into a team offense with other scorers and his defensive value is terrible.
Rip doesn't belong ahead of Roy. As others have said, I wouldn't take Iverson or Manu at this stage of their careers either.
It's not necessarily about who would you take for your team. Brandon Roy fits us so perfectly because the team was built around him. It reflects his temperment and plays to his strengths. I doubt they're looking at the next 10 years, but the here and now. Given those parameters, I don't think it's unreasonable to put guys like Hamilton and Ginobili in front of him.
Meh, lists like this are stupid anyway. Roy might not ever get voted into the All-Star team by the fans, but the coaches love him.
It's hard not to feel feel good about the Blazers when you see Roy listed among those players. You could really make an argument for Roy not being a top 10 shooting guard. What has Roy proved in the NBA compared to the other guards on this list? Most of those guards have played huge roles on teams that have made it to the conference finals and the NBA finals. I think McGrady is the only guard on that list outside of Roy who has not been to a conference final. Will Roy ever been mentioned in the same category as McGrady when people talk about individual accomplishments, most likely no. Hopefully this doesn't come off as Roy hate. Personally, I'm a huge Roy fan. He's my favorite player in the NBA. I just find it really awesome and crazy in a sense to see Roy on a list like this when he's never been to the playoffs, only played two NBA seasons, never averaged over 20 points a game. Also, I think Ed O brings up a really good point "I think most of us who post here have a longer term perspective than lists like this one that are just a current "snapshot". This is further reinforced for us Blazers fans because we have had precious little to be excited about without a heavy dash of "wait 'til next year" attitude.".
I think Ed pretty much nailed it. Long term Roy would likely be a bit higher, but for the short term I don't think it's unreasonable to have most those guys above Roy. Roy has proven a lot less then them, and it's not like he's being snubbed under Jason Jennings or something. There's no doubt in my mind that a list with an eye towards going the future would have him placed higher.
kiss asssssssssssssssss! Brown noser!!!! Teachers pet!!!!!!!!! Something that has always been very important to me is does that player make other players better and based off that he moves up a couple of spots.
Roy's injury history isn't stellar, either. Given the roster situation last year after Oden's injury, you'd think Roy would have put up a few 50 point games. He probably will when he's fully matured as a player. He's awesome already, though. I just picked him up in the 2nd round in a fantasy draft, to go with LeBron. As much as I like Roy, Joe Johnson is bigger, quicker, and unstoppable as a scorer, and at least equal as a ballhandler and distributor.
Yup, Johnson is a stud. Phoenix fans must be quite upset that Sarver didn't want to pay to keep him. Nash, Johnson, Marion and Stoudemire would have been sickness, as Johnson got better and better. It makes me very happy that Portland has an owner who, based on past action, seems willing to pay what it takes to keep talent together.
For the lazy ones: 1-Kobe 2-Wade 3-McGrady 4-Ginobli 5-Joe Johnson 6-Iverson 7-Hamilton 8-Roy 9-Vince 10-Ray Allen
