The free throws swished. One after the other. Five straight … six straight … seven straight … eight straight free throws from Andre Drummond. The shooting form, the release point identical for each of those seemingly effortless attempts.

Pleased with the consistency, Detroit Pistons assistant coach Malik Allen gives Drummond a little encouragement.

And then … the next free throw attempt doesn’t even hit the rim. The next one clangs off the back of the rim and scales a couple feet into the air before dropping nowhere close to the basket. And the next one left Drummond’s hands as though launched from a cannon, potentially bruising the backboard upon contact.

Drummond made 22 of 40 free throws during one post-practice sequence Sunday morning.

The Pistons would kill for a comparable free-throw shooting percentage during games.

They got that in Game 4 against Cleveland. Drummond was 5 of 10 from the line. It would’ve been 6-of-11 had Stanley Johnson not committed a lane violation, looking for an early jump at the offensive rebound.
