Lohse looks strong in spring debut

    "The final batter Kyle Lohse faced Friday in his first start of spring training was Houston outfielder Hunter Pence, a division foe he could duel a dozen or more times this season.

    The Cardinals' righthander was leery of using the same pitches or the same sequence now that he'll test Pence with later. Then Lohse fell behind in the count, Pence fouled off a few fastballs, and the at-bat got to a point where Lohse couldn't play coy with his stuff.

    Besides, it's not like the league has seen it this sharp the last two seasons.

    "It was a good time to experiment with something that I haven't done a lot of the last couple years just because I haven't had the command of my change-up," said Lohse, who fired a 2-2 change-up that struck out Pence for Lohse's final out of his day. "To be able to do that, at this point of the season ... that's a big positive.""
