<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Not since 2002, when their only signings of note were Jacque Vaughn and a washed-up Shawn Kemp, have the Orlando Magic looked as uninvolved in the free-agent market on a large scale as they appear to be this summer.
The Magic are projected to have the NBA's fifth-highest payroll next season, with almost $30 million going toward the salaries of Steve Francis and Grant Hill alone. This comes after a year in which they also ranked fifth in overall salary but failed to make the playoffs. (Oddly enough, three of the four teams ahead of Orlando -- New York, Portland and Minnesota -- ended up in the draft lottery as well.)

So while assistant general manager Dave Twardzik said he has identified the free agents in whom the Magic are interested, he could largely be at the mercy of teams with much more salary-cap space available for negotiating purposes.

Some reports have cited forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim of the Trail Blazers and guard Antonio Daniels of the Seattle SuperSonics as the Magic's top priorities. But Abdur-Rahim, who made $14 million last season, is being coveted by at least five other teams -- including the defending champion San Antonio Spurs, who could also be making a pitch to have Daniels rejoin them after a three-year absence.

The Magic have the mid-level exception of almost $5 million, which they used last summer to sign Hedo Turkoglu. It could be that Twardzik and Otis Smith will break up that sum in order to sign two veterans, most likely a point guard and a center.

"We'll just wait and see where it goes," Twardzik said before leaving Tuesday to attend the first of three camps for high-school seniors sponsored by shoe companies and then heading to the summer league in Las Vegas in which the Magic are playing.</div>

Huh? Whats not to listen to we have the MLE of 5 mill, We want Sar and Daniels but teams like the Lakers,Nets,Heat,Cavs,Spurs are in the mix plus they got the $. We might be moving Battie,Kato,Dougy in trades and moving Stevio to Sg so looking for a Vet Pg like Armstrong and a Vet Center is what we could end of doing. We are waiting to see what the Org. does july 22 is the signing date for FAs so no need to tell people if were going to sign someone under the noses.

So whats not to listen to them about?

ur an idiot. WE DONT NEED DANIELS. we dont need a point guard. darrell armstrong wont solve any of our answers. We already have a high payroll why do we want to bring old vets and point guards( a position we have beyond filled on the roster) and pay them a decent chunk of change. Daniels wont even fit into our system. Plus the new system brian hill is putting in place will in time put dwight howard at the center position so signing a center will do us no good. getting rid of money aka franchise, and christie will do us good. daytona beach news journal sucks and u have no idea what ur talking about

Umm.. Make your next post helpfull and maybe nicer for everyone.

P.S. I never said we needed Dainels I said there were rumors of us wanting him but we didnt contact his agent. Armstrong is a mentor to Nelson,Diener we can use any good insperations on our team plus Orlando fans loved him.

Good to see another poster hopefully your just blowing off some steam HOPEFULLY.

Hey man calm down. There is no need to call another member an idiot when you two aren't seeing eye to eye. Rumors are, we are looking at different point guards on the market since we aren't sure which position Francis will be starting at next season so this article is somewhat true. However, Antonio Daniels' agent has already said that he has not recieved a call from the Magic and Davis doesn't plan on meeting anyone in Orlando anytime soon. I think that we should bring in a point guard since our only options are Jameer Nelson and Travis Diener, two young point guards who still have a lot to prove. Nelson played well at the end of last season and Diener looks like a promising rookie but I would like to sign someone else as a backup plan incase these guys can't start right away.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting MainMan:</div><div class="quote_post">Plus the new system brian hill is putting in place will in time put dwight howard at the center position so signing a center will do us no good. getting rid of money aka franchise, and christie will do us good. daytona beach news journal sucks and u have no idea what ur talking about</div>
The key words there are "in time", which is exactly why we need to bring a center, particulary a veteren one. If Dwight Howard is going to switch to the center position in time or attempts to make the switch and doesn't match up well against other centers in the East like Shaquille O' Neal or Ben Wallace, what are we going to do? This is why we need good backup option incase Dwight's size and experience hold him back from making the change. One thing we all agree on is that we need to get rid of Doug Christie. Having an expensive veteren is bad enough but the fact that he has stated he wants out several times makes the situation even worse. I say we trade Christie away for picks or just drop him thanks to the new clause in the CBA which allows us to drop one player and then save us luxury tax money. The contract would still be included in our salary cap but at least we would make roster space for someone who wants to be here. This would be a last option of course since his expiring contract could be valuable on the market this offseason to teams looking to rebuild.

It is always good to have a backup plan when dealing with situations like players switching positions or when starting young players. I think that this article is very true and makes a lot of sense. I don't know what made you disagree with this article so harshly since it is accurate for the most part.

Keeping Doug Christie would make more sense in what you are saying MainMan, you are talking about how our payroll is so big. Christie has an 8+ million expiring deal, so we would get that money at the end of the season.

I still say wait and try to trade him later. Our owner is actually proving he will spend now, so why not do this until he changes his mind.

yes i am blowing off some steam sorry. Yea the owner is spending money now but in the wrong place. All the key free agents are locked up and there is really no one appealing to the magic or really we actually "need". If Devous was smart he would start spending his money in a facility, so we can start getting more attendance. Which is a project in itself in time.

Also yea everyone hates christie but truefully i really dont see him getting traded or released this season. although thats just my view
