#1 seed Mairis Briedis (25-1, 18 KOs) struggled to defeat fringe contender Noel Mikaelian (23-2, 10 KOs) by a controversial 12 round unanimous decision to win the WBC Diamond title in their quarterfinal fight in the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament at the UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois. The scores were 116-110, 115-111 and 114-112. It was a hard fight to score due to all the head-butts and rabbit punches being thrown by Mikaelian. Boxing News 24 scored it for Mikaelian 8 rounds to 4. He looked to be the better fighter of the two, and he was landing the better shots throughout the contest.
