Matt Brown has a target on his back, and this time it isn’t the angry Brazilian MMA fanbase.

The welterweight contender – who was submitted by Damian Maia Saturday night – was attacked early Sunday morning in his hotel lobby by his former jiu-jitsu coach Rodrigo Botti. Botti was not only Browns former jiu-jitsu coach, he was also the co-owner of the Ohio Combat Club located in Columbus Ohio.

Botti allegedly attacked Brown from behind and subsequently ran away from the scene. Brown’s training partner, Vinicius Lemos chased Botti down outside the hotel, catching him outside the hotel. The scrap was filmed and was posted to YouTube shortly after.

A spokesman from the Curitiba Police Department spoke with MMA Fighting and stated that “Botti has decided to press assault charges against Brown’s friend (Lemos).”

Demian Maia, in what I think was an astute observation, suggested that Matt Brown needed to fire himself up for the fight and since he could get nothing out of milquetoast Maia he got it out of the fans.

Not sure how or if the former coach situation is related.
