The Mavs just won a title with Butler on the bench after undergoing knee surgery. In his absence, Shawn Marion held down the small forward position nicely. In theory, Butler can swing to shooting guard, but he didn’t do that at all last season in Dallas. Besides, the Mavs are well-stocked there with Jason Terry, Rodrigue Beaubois, Rudy Fernandez and Jason Kidd, who can serve as something of a hybrid guard at this point in his career. The Mavs’ go-to crunch-time lineup in the postseason and parts of the regular season (Marion, Terry, Kidd, Tyson Chandler and Dirk Nowitzki) performed ridiculously well, and it did not include Butler.
