https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/a-better-way-to-evaluate-nba-defense/ I have no idea if this new metric is really all that much better than drpm or dbpm, but I'm sure some of y'all will find this interesting.
2 of the top 6? PLAYER POSSESSIONS PLAYED DRAYMOND RATING Derrick Favors 4,036 +3.74 Mitchell Robinson 2,882 +3.32 Derrick Jones Jr. 2,389 +3.10 Jusuf Nurkic 4,212 +3.03 Maxi Kleber 3,168 +2.94 Hassan Whiteside 3,490 +2.89
Interesting...thanks for posting. The author isn't really claiming this new metric is "better" than drpm or dbpm, but they do state it is not redundant or not perfectly correlated, thus adding more information. If that's true, then it seems a logical next step would be to develop a fitted model combining both DRAYMOND and drpm regressed against RAPM. Of course, for that to make sense, RAPM needs to be agreed upon as the "right" and "accurate" metric of a players value.
