The only answer to your question is, because most people (i.e. majority of voters) do care about this. I agree it's hardly the first quality that a president should have. I'd settle for working hard and being honest with the people.
The sad fact is that winning the debates seems to have no effect on the voting outcome. Gore is regarded as having won all three against W, and W won (if by a technicality.) Similarly, Hillary cleaned Trump's clock in the debates, and again he won (and again, if by a technicality.) But I do agree, Trump would trump Merkeley in a debate. Hey, maybe that's good! Then we would win the electoral college, if not the popular vote!
That shows that the debates are just like figure skating. There is no way on Earth that Hillary won all of the debates except in the minds of people who state opinions as facts. Unfortunately the line that won one debate for Trump single handledly was a prediction and not a plan for change.
