Nothing wrong about this article...so it's 13 months old....it's not a dead project, it's just a project looking for ownership or relocation...would make more sense for the Oakland A's to relocate here than Vegas....The Padres are Vegas' team now.
A baseball stadium to the north or south of the Moda Center would be great. Could have a boardwalk in left or right field like the San Francisco Giants have that would be on the shores of the Willamette. Would probably need to have a retractable roof too
It will never happen. They would expect the city to pay for it and voters will never pass a bill to fund a stadium needed for MLB.
I'm mostly of this mindset too. For that reason, and also because Paul Allen will do everything he can to block a baseball team coming in. Hockey, on the other hand, would fit perfectly in the Moda Center, McGowan is already a very accomplished and admired hockey exec... makes too much sense not to happen (and hockey is, in general, WAY more fun to watch than baseball...)
Yep I think hockey would be very successful here. I don't think Paul Allen is interested though. It would be a direct competitor of the Blazers for the entertainment dollar.
I'm a baseball fan but I gotta go with the NHL. Makes more sense and the local lack of nightlife wouldn't necessarily kill us in attracting players. If it were a baseball team then it would have to be an covered stadium and we'd be also at the mercy of whomsver we hired to run the minor league system. Want to know how much a MLB team is at the mercy of it's scouts? Then turn on the draft in a couple of hours and watch the Padres table. They are praying that the Hunter Greene wonder kid falls to them at 3 since its all their fans have to live for, "We got picks!" No they got shit. With a great system Portland could be the Royals OR we be the Padres. It's a tight rope.
