Nationals pounded Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook for six runs in one inning and unloaded the bullpen to hold fast to their early lead in an 8-6 victory at Busch Stadium.

The two teams will reset for Game 2 of the day-night doubleheader with Jaime Garcia leading the Cardinals against the Nats' Jordan Zimmmermann.

The Cardinals got three RBIs and a homer from center fielder Colby Rasmus and another homer and two RBIs from first baseman Albert Pujols. Pujols' two-out RBI single in the Cardinals' eighth inning brought the Nats' lead back down to two, but the Cardinals would get no closer, despite several opportunities. The Cardinals grounded into four double plays in the game to sabotage rallies, including two double plays hit into by Rasmus.

A crowd smaller than 10,000 attended the afternoon game.

The picture says it all. Westbrook is off to a bad, bad start for 2011. He now has an ERA approaching 10.00!
