The NBA and NBAPA just agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement. One of the key aspects of the agreement includes the long rumored in-season tournament. The agreement begins next season so we’ll be seeing the in-season tournament as soon as this fall! https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id...ee-new-7-year-collective-bargaining-agreement
its a pretty shit way to drum up some publicity -- itd be better if it was something that happened during summer when basketball typically isnt on, then i may give a shit.... but this aint it, especially when most these dudes make more in half a game if that than i do in a year....
Have to see how the actual structure is, but I really liked the idea. Silly that 30 teams play all year for only a single thing one team wins and it's usually about 5 teams that have any sort of a chance. Many of the same teams as the last 5 years. Compare to NFL or March Madness where many teams and unpredictable results can happen.
My position has been that if someone like Atlanta wins the mid season tournament, but either misses the playoffs or gets bounced in the first round, who the fuck is going to give two shits? Giving the players more money doesn’t motivate me to root for Portland to win some bullshit tournament that means NOTHING. Do we get a parade down Sandy Blvd instead of Broadway?
Another tournament is fine as I see it. What I really like is that you will lose access to the MLE for teams with high salaries, now that there is a second apron. They also said they want to had more exceptions for teams below. The article didn’t state any more details but I am interested in finding that out.
I like the crackdown on the circumvention of the luxary tax . What Golden State has been able to get away with is not in the spirit of fairness of the Salary Cap.
The games in the tournament will be regular season games. Will you really not watch because it’s also called a tournament?
It has no history and therefore very little value but I think fifteen years from now people will be differentiating between teams that won both the finals and in season tourney as opposed to just the finals. Just another trophy to get. It's also something for teams to celebrate earlier in the season when games seem like a grind... something to grab the attention of fans. I'll be excited if we win the first one not like I will be if we win a championship but still pretty fucking happy.
that's not really a substantial crackdown at all. The Warriors have a 193M payroll and DiVincenzo is only making 4.5M. Besides that, the change will be "eased into the salary cap over a period of years". It's a joke
this is the earliest ratification of a new CBA I can remember what that tells me is that both sides are expecting a massive infusion of revenue in the new media deals in 2025 and don't want to do anything to jeopardize that. the one provision I'm really interested in is if they agreed to any "smoothing" of the jump in revenue. The players adamantly opposed smoothing in 2016. I'd imagine they would have opposed it again. if there is no smoothing, 2025 might make 2016 look like a drop in the bucket
What is the more that fans will care about? This is a serious question. If Portland won 9 straight or lost 9 straight during the tournament, my joy level would be the same if it was not during the tournament. Dame getting another $500k means nothing to me. Dame winning an NBA title is what I care about
You mean like a truck dropping into Evan Turner's swimming pool? It is April 1st, after all... Great day for the league and player's association to come to a swift agreement.
This..... @KingSpeed never said i wouldnt watch just makes no sense on why its even there in the first place, it legit makes no difference they are just putting lipstick on a pig and calling it sally.
That's your position now. Will a large group of fans in a decade or so think differently? I'm guessing the NBA is betting yes.
