Latest rumor is that the Mets are looking to buy a team.

The more teams, the better it is for MLS in my opinion.

True, but you need quality first.

MLS should not exceed 18 teams at the most. You can't have 30 teams in the same league with football. I also don't understand why New York wants a "second team" when the first one still doesn't even make profits yet just like most of the franchises. They're close, but still no cigar.

Maybe if the Red Bulls actually played in New York they would get more fans, the Meadowlands don't attract too many fans. In this case, i think adding a team could work.

Interestingly, the team the Mets want to buy would not play in CitiField.

    Link.

I don't think the plan is to go that big. I think they're looking to max out at 20, which is just about right and if done over time, should work out properly.

They are moving, but the new location is actually further away from New York City.

Good. MLS teams need their own stadiums, and that includes the Revolution. I think one of the requirements for new franchises is a new soccer-specific-stadium already built or planned and approved.

    That's what's good about it.

NJ is one of the real soccer hotbeds in the US, and a nice 25,000 seat arena in the suburbs will be a huge hit.

They should have a North and South divison if football is taking off like this in the US financially.

    Nope.

Also, I'm in favor of having a second team in New York because the second team would be a real New York team. The MetroStars (pre-Red Bull) were in New York/New Jersey and named accordingly because they were supposed to be attracting both the suburban Jersey market and the NYC crowd. Its pretty clear now that they're looking solely at the Jersey folks.

With Seattle and Philadelphia coming on board, MLS has room for two to four new franchises as 18-20 is ideal for a soccer league. I think New York City and St. Louis are definites. NYC audiences will go for a team that is theirs, but not a team focused on suburban Jersey families. St. Louis historically has been one of the major talent producing areas on the country for a long time.

If MLS goes to 20, I could see the other two franchises being Canadian teams. While I respect the passion that Toronto FC brings, I don't think MLS should have Canadian teams. If Canada wants club teams competing a higher level, they should make a better league for themselves. The 19th and 20th franchises should go to Portland and Charlotte.
