I listened so you didn’t have to.

    - spoke highly of Baldwin. Said he can be an “elite defender” and his shot making is “coming around.” jaynes asked about cap implications and Neil brought up Paul Allen. Seems like he’s not going anywhere. Ok interview is off to a good start.

    - mentioned third year jumps of Crabbe, Barton, and Pat when asked about Layman. Said the quickest way for him to get on the court is shooting with consistency. No shit? Also confirmed his contract was guaranteed.

    - most impressed with Simons’ composure.

    - pretty honest assessment of Swanigan. Said he needs to improve his finishing around the basket. Needs to “get more clever.” Brought up Randolph and Glen Davis (lol wut) as examples.

    - Quotes when asked about using the trade exceptions and the rest of the offseason:

"We’ll see. I think, part of the frustration is, we spoke with a lot of teams about utilizing it before the draft and teams weren’t ready to move on their established players at that point. They wanted to see what they drafted and then got into free agency.”

"I’ve got multiple calls about it in the past few days, but the calculus has changed a little bit because we have added some perimeter players which was clearly the need. We extended Jusuf Nurkic’s deal. There are major cap implications and tax implications/Paul is never going to shy away from, it’s just right now, the bar is that player is going to have to be good enough and have a high enough impact on the roster to justify, basically a 3X cost, you’re going to end up tripling the salary based on the tax.”

“We’re actively looking to use that, but we’re also actively looking to make trades across the board. The nice thing about the trade exception, even if it isn’t just a clean absorption of a player into the exception, there are deals where we’re dealing with an imbalance of what we convey and what we receive back, and having those two trade exceptions to absorb a contract that may not work, math-wise, within the 125 percent, gives us more deal-making flexibility."

“Hopefully we’re not done building the roster. We’re still trying to be very active. Even to date, it’s been very slow in terms of trade transactions. A lot of it has just been people handling their business with free agency. Hopefully, things like trades and bolstering rosters with players with a longer track record come into play."

    Personal thoughts?

TPEs will expire unless it’s used to take on a salary in a bigger trade.

It’s more likely we make a standard trade, but I couldn’t guess who we’d target or who we’d send out.

Kind of annoyed how much he touted the Trade Exception as an asset and hasn’t figured out a way to use it.
    He’s right about Swanigan.
I have been of the opinion that the Blazers moves for the summer are basically done, and this did nothing to change my mind on that, but there’s still time so we’ll see.
    Thanks for posting this.

Hmmm, this seems way different than what people were saying yesterday.

Regarding the TPE, I hope that means one of 3 things:

    1) If we got back a good enough player, he'd use it.

    2) If we were getting an asset like a pick or a good young player back he'd use it.

    3) If we had a trade that was obviously in our favor but took back a bad contract as compensation for that trade.

Sounds like a typical NO circle jerk interview but it’s good to know he’s seeing some of the things the fans are seeing. Thank you for posting a recap. I appreciate it. If I had listened, I would have probably kicked my radio to the curb......

I just don’t see what assets we have outside of CJ and Collins to bring in an impact player. Someone like Trent or Simons could be sacrificed but man, it better be for someone good, and not like a Jonathon Simmons or someone with a similarly limited ceiling.

I think Aminu and Harkless are on good contracts that other teams would take.

Sure but what would we get in return? When I say impact player I’m thinking of Kawhi Leonard, maybe Kevin Love. Guys like that. Doubt either Harkless or Aminu gets us in that conversation lol.

Well for a impact player you either need to give up a guy like CJ or, have a package of guys to give up. Maybe Aminu, Harkless and a pick could or two put you somewhere in the conversation for Leonard but probably not.

Also, it's possible that another trade makes the tax implications of using the TPE a little less costly. For example if we traded Turner and Swanigan for Tristan Thompson like what was discussed in another thread that saves us $2.14 million this year and opens up a roster spot and balances the roster a little bit.

What about Gallinari for Turner and a pick

We add a little salary but add a player we could actually use

    Imagine a second unit of

    Baldwin
    Curry
    Trent
    Gallinari
    Collins

I don’t think there is a player worth the TPE... I think the paths is clear... there is enough temporary/future talent and depth at SG that now is the time to trade CJ and upgrade at 3/4 position... hopefully this is why Neil as been accumulating SG’s

Love this trade! Gallinari is 6’10” and can hit 3’s... plus getting rid of Turner, which opens minutes for Baldwin!

Mmm I would call those guys roster changers. Above an impact player. An impact player can still be a roll player. Doesn't need to be an all star.

Nurk was one hell of an impact player for us, but isnt a star.

I think your standards are pretty high for an impact player.

The problem with LAC is they owe their 1st round pick to Boston next year. It's lottery protected so they can't trade a pick until 2022.
