The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, appear to have a new event on the horizon. According to the Associated Press, 3-on-3 basketball “is all but certain” to be added to the new list of events, which includes skateboarding and sport climbing. “It would certainly be a perfect fit,” said Patrick Baumann, who serves as the secretary general of world basketball’s governing body. “The best urban team sport is 3-on-3 street basketball.” Baumann noted that the group attempted to get 3-on-3 basketball approved for the 2016 Rio Olympics, but were ultimately rebuffed due to a cap on the number of athletes that could compete in events overall.
