The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, appear to have a new event on the horizon. According to the Associated Press, 3-on-3 basketball “is all but certain” to be added to the new list of events, which includes skateboarding and sport climbing.

“It would certainly be a perfect fit,” said Patrick Baumann, who serves as the secretary general of world basketball’s governing body. “The best urban team sport is 3-on-3 street basketball.”

Baumann noted that the group attempted to get 3-on-3 basketball approved for the 2016 Rio Olympics, but were ultimately rebuffed due to a cap on the number of athletes that could compete in events overall.

Who would make up the rosters is not yet clear, but it seems unlikely that NBA stars would jump from the traditional Olympic roster to join the 3-on-3 ranks.
