they'll need it since they have to send 155M to the Mountain West Conference in exit fees and poaching penalties

of course, the massively hypocritical Pac-2 is suing the MWC over the poaching fees it agreed to pay while being advised by high priced lawyers. I'd wonder how many millions of the 55M in poaching fees will go to the Pac-2's lawyers. IIRC, Boise St and Colorado St are also suing the MWC over exit fees

reportedly, this two-pronged legal attack was a Pac-X strategy to force the MWC back to the negotiating table and reducing the Pac's contractual obligation. The assumption was the dual track lawsuits would be a major obstacle to the MWC from recovering from the Pac-2's raid, and prevent the MWC from adding teams and becoming a legal FBS conference. But the MWC fooled them all by actually adding the needed teams, meeting the NCAA's FBS requirements, and also signing a new media deal thru 2032.

This means the MWC has no compelling reason to abandon the legal fight and compromise. Meanwhile the Pac-X has only 7 teams and needs another school to join to become an FBS member; and the clock is ticking. And about the only visible candidate for inclusion is Sacramento St. The problem with Sac. St. is that they are still an FCS school and the application and approval process mandated by the NCAA for FCS-->FBS elevation is 2 full calendar years; so, not till 2027. And the Pac-12 needs to be at 8 FBS teams by July 31, 2026 . The lawsuits the Pac-X believed would be the levers they needed to make the MWC cry uncle could actually be dead-weights dragging them under. The Pac-X needs an 8th full FBS school and the list of candidates has dwindled to almost nobody.

reportedly, the new strategy of the Pac-X is to pivot from trying to add an 8th school to trying to secure a media deal and then using that as leverage to pry a hypothetical 8th school from parts unknown. But the reports are also that the Pac-X is having a difficult time generating media interest without that full FBS accreditation. Painted into a dark corner.

the irony is that 100M Rose Bowl payout over 2 years; and other bowl payouts; and CFP payout; and all of the March Madness money....almost all of that OSU/WSU could have split. All they had to do was invite the 12 MWC schools to join the Pac-X. But no, that wouldn't do. After all of their whining and crying and venom about getting fucked over by realignment, those Pac-2 hypocrites chose to try and fuck over Wyoming and New Mexico and Hawaii, etc in the exact same way OSU/WSU had been fucked over

Have to say I'm impressed with OSU's recruiting right now. They have Maalik Murphy coming in from Duke as QB and Riley Williams coming in from Miami as TE. Both of these guys are tope tier in my opinion. I'm also hearing rumors that UNLV might flip on the MWC and join the PAC. Let's go!

What is the reasoning behind not inviting all of the MWC?

Same as all college football picking one school over another - the lesser schools don't provide much additional revenue but would take a cut of the TV contract.

It also wasn't just an exclusive OSU/WSU decision - it was an agreement with all of the new PAC schools including Boise St/Fresno/San Diego/Utah St/Colorado S.

OSU/WSU had many discussions about a complete merger with the MWC but were not able to come to an agreement.

I agree the 'dead weight' argument is valid. Teams like Wyoming and New Mexico have tiny media markets and fan bases. But, at the same time you'd think OSU/WSU would be sensitive to that because for decades they were considered Pac-10/12 dead weight by the same gauges. And it was those gauges that left OSU/WSU behind in the 2023 realignment.

I'm not sure about the merger discussions. I don't believe the Pac-2 ever seriously considered merging with all the teams of the MWC. And, to be fair, it wasn't just OSU/WSU who wanted to ditch the supposed dead weights. San Diego St. pushed for a super merger of the 'best' teams for the Pac-4 (Stanford & Cal) + MWC +AAC. And of course, 5 MWC teams eventually defected to the Pac-X. But what I read, more than once, was that in the initial merger talks OSU/WSU were demanding a bigger cut of media revenue if the merger included all MWC teams. And that was a non-starter for the MWC. It was essentially a closed-door way to kill any full merger deals without publicly killing the talks

I would be really surprised if the Pac-X is successful in either one of their lawsuits. The signed-under-duress argument doesn't seem to withstand legal scrutiny. And, the reporting was the Pac-X was primarily trying to re-negotiate using the lawsuits as levers. But the fact the MWC, surprisingly, not only added the teams necessary to be an FBS conference, but also signed a media deal thru 2032 means they have no compelling reason to compromise. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on the Pac-X. They have to have 8 full FBS teams by July 2026 and the list of candidates has just about dwindled to zero (Sac St is FCS). If the Pac-X can't be accredited as FBS by then, they could drop into some kind of FCS limbo, and likely be in that limbo for a minimum of 2 years. They would also lose rights to the PAC brand.

And those lawsuits, initially thought to be leverage, could actually end up as obstacles as the clock is ticking. Supposedly the Pac-X had pivoted from trying to find an 8th team to trying to secure a media deal first. But with the possibility of the Pac-X not being an FBS conference, landing any media deal would be a lot more difficult. The MWC's new media deal reportedly will pay around 6M/year to each school. If the legality of the exit fees and poaching fees are upheld, then the Pac-12's punitive contributions to the MWC could push each MWC school's share up to 8-9M/year. That might not be significantly less that what Pac-X teams would generate in a media deal, assuming they can escape the corner they are in

I'm curious: have any Beaver fans heard about an FBS school the Pac-X has a realistic chance of adding as the 8th team?

I guess you can never say never, but UNLV has publicly committed to the MWC and the MWC already has a new media contract that runs thru 2032

And in the GOR the MWC signed with media, I am pretty sure the exit fees from the MWC have been increased over the current 18M. Those exit fees would be waived for any team that has been invited to join the Big-10, SEC, Big-12, or ACC. But not waived for the Pac-X. Also, I can't recall what the deadline is but the exit fee for UNLV from the MWC would increase to 36M is UNLV announces departure after April of this year

I really don't think any MWC or AAC school is an option because of recent GOR's they have signed. Sacramento State would like to join but they are an FCS school who has yet to apply for FBS consideration and that process takes a minimum of 2 years so they would be FBS in July 2026 when the Pac-X would lose they rights to the PAC brand

it might have to be a school like New Mexico State or Sam Houston. But Same Houston has already declined an offer from the MWC because of travel expense

Anyone paying attention to this game? Beavs blew a 4-point lead with 30 seconds left, but at least got to OT. Now they're up 4 again with just over a minute left

I thought they would lose it after Fallah fouled out, but they absolutely nutted up.

So cool! From the TV view it was action packed from start to finish with tons of different players contributing from both teams -- I'm sure it was even louder inside Gill -- hopefully Beavs can keep the momentum going
