And where is the accountability for the refs. I think that is the biggest issue is not matter how many bad calls, how many blown calls there is no accountability to the refs. I don't know what the answer is, but calls like that should have consequences.

That ref is a total shit fucker, like he literally fucks some shit.

He should have had a V8 or 2.

Maybe it’s a good thing he is a ref and not performing open heart surgery on infants as a day job.

The argument some are making is that the rule sucks but the call was correct. You can't land on the QB.
Either way, something needs to be changed. Horrible

You can't land on the quarterback?

That was a textbook tackle. He basically tumbled over him :banghead2:

What are they going to do next, make rushing the passer a penalty?

That’s the old “body weight” roughing the passer. I’m a Vikings fan so I was watching that game live and that has to be the worst call in the NFL this season.

You can thank Aaron Rodgers for this rule. A few seasons ago he was sacked and driven to the turf and broke his collar bone. I believe the rule was created the following season.

If they are going to call that tackle, what is the defense supposed to do when the qb has the ball in his hands. Make him wear a red penny and two hand touch on the quarterbacks?

Let's be honest here, the NFL and NBA became a joke when they became massively corporate. They are protecting their interests and that's it.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
You can't use your body weight to slam a quarterback down; of course you can "land" on the quarterback--the vast majority of sacks lead to the defensive player ending up on top of the quarterbacks. Sacking the quarterback itself would essentially be illegal if you couldn't land on the quarterback.

The argument those people are making is just trying to stretch to find a way to make that call reasonable; that's not the rule--the rule is you can't unnecessarily throw your body weight down on a vulnerable passer. "Unnecessarily" is in the wording and abiding by the laws of physics can't in any way be claimed as unnecessary.

Yeah, no doubt the days of Jack Tatum were a lot more fun as a fan, but not exactly fun for the players with brain damage.

Let's be real here. It's a contact sport. There has to be some kind of realistic expectation of what a defender can and can't do while he's hurtling at someone at full speed.

I agree. And I think the hit on Cousins should be allowed. But watching backup QBs all season is not fun either. Rule changes were needed...but I agree they went too far.

"Headhunting" on receivers going over the middle and taking out QBs knees while they are just standing there were good changes IMO or players would never last a season. Leading with the crown of the helmet was also a needed change. Hitting a moving target with your shoulder pads in the head and neck area is not a good rule. No way can a defender anticipate where the contact will occur at that speed.

With all that said, the protections that the NFL affords to QBs is still miles better than the bullshit star treatment that the NBA gives players like LeBron/Davis/etc.

I think it looked like an intentional bw tackle from that referee's position, but only from that exact direction.

Is there a provision in the rules that would allow the replay officials to overturn this call, had they been so inclined?

Just gonna say--having not heard or read anything about this call and just now watching the video on mute, I knew exactly what the call was going to be. I don't disagree that the rule is lame, and especially in that particular situation, but I don't think it was really a terrible call.
