During Friday's Bulls-Mavericks telecast, ESPN commentator Jeff Van Gundy accused Bulls management of trying to undermine coach Tom Thibodeau by leaking disparaging stories, saying the practice dates to Phil Jackson's tenure as well as Scott Skiles' and Vinny Del Negro's. lRelated Heat's Luol Deng on his return to Chicago "Tom Thibodeau isn't being undermined at all," said John Paxson, executive vice president of basketball operations. Adams’ contract was not renewed last summer by the Bulls, for reasons the team did not fully elaborate on, reportedly angering both the coaching staff and (more importantly) the players along the way. Adams was also not given a reason for not being offered a new contract after a rough 2012-13 season, a campaign that saw the Bulls work without Derrick Rose for the entire year, but one that saw the team also grit out 45 wins and reach the second round before falling to the eventual champion Miami Heat. Adrian Wojnarowski reported in October that Adams was not brought back because of a contentious relationship he shared with Bulls general manager Gar Forman, who didn’t like assistant coach carping about personnel moves that cost Chicago Kyle Korver and C.J. Watson (while bringing in Kirk Hinrich on a much-criticized contract) over the 2012 offseason. Adams didn’t exactly confirm all of this while talking to the Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson recently, but he did confirm at least one carp in the rare instance of an assistant coach going on record with the media.

I’m a Bulls fan (check) that sometimes has issues when Van Gundy strays from describing the action on court (check), I’m the best candidate to be sensitive to these sorts of things, and yet I’ve never thought that JVG had it out for the Bulls. Before and during Thibodeau’s time with the franchise. Of course, we can’t blame Jeff Van Gundy for hitting up that click bait. Even San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich dove in on the subject last week. From Steve Aschburner at NBA.com: "Well, whoever asked me that question before the game -- about [the Bulls] not listening to Thibs and Thibs has lost 'em and that kind of [expletive] -- you got your answer," Popovich said, unprompted. "As I told you before the game, that's baloney. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even Coach Pop. Sigh.
I believe Popovich was responding to something in the press. You know, one of those leaked stories perhaps.
