    Free agent guard Gary Payton won't return to the Bucks after declining an offer from the team.

    New Bucks general manager Larry Harris said Monday he spoke with Payton's agent, Aaron Goodwin, who confirmed Payton has declined to stay with Milwaukee."We certainly respect Gary's decision," said Harris, who took over as general manager last week.

    Payton was acquired by the Bucks in a February trade involving three-time All-Star Ray Allen, who went to Seattle. Payton and Desmond Mason were sent to Milwaukee for Allen, Kevin Ollie, Ronald Murray and a first-round draft choice.

    Payton started 28 games for the Bucks, averaging a team-high 19.6 points and 7.8 assists. A nine-time All Star and one of the league's best defensive guards, he became a free agent July 1.

    The Bucks barely made the playoffs with Payton and Sam Cassell as the starting guards, then lost to New Jersey in six games in the first playoff round. Payton led the Bucks with 18.5 points and 8.7 assists against the Nets.

    Cassell and center Ervin Johnson were traded June 27 to Minnesota for forward Joe Smith and guard Anthony Peeler, who was waived by the Bucks on Monday.

    Harris said the Bucks would work closely with Goodwin to explore "any sign of trade options that are mutually beneficial."With both Cassell and Payton gone, the Bucks may have to rely more on top draft pick T.J. Ford at point guard.

    I am getting tired of all this sign and trade talk about the Mavs. There is no need for it. all they need is a good post player.

    Dirk is more of a outside player that can post up. Same with Rafe.

    Wow... are the Bucks screwed now? hehe... I don't think they have a single person on their roster that has ever averaged more than 20 ppg in a season, and they only have 2 guards returning with any NBA experience.

    bucks have a young team with ford, mason, thomas (i'm surprised he's still here) & haislap. they've definately gone the rebuilding direction. this team could end up with the worst record in the league. the are clippers of the east at this point.

    Reaf is a very soft inconsistant inside player...all mavs need is a banger who can play d and post up...as for bucks....check this from DA

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Portland also is looking to put together a sign-and-trade offer to Milwaukee, believed to be center Arvydas Sabonis and guard Jeff McInnis. Sabonis, who is not expected to return to the NBA next season, would be waived by Milwaukee under that scenario.

    </div>

    interesting...GP is suppose to anounce where he is going today...
