Hi all that are still around in the dog-days of post summer league, an centuries away from training camp and eternities away from pre-season. Question for you in regard to the player contribution calculation. I started this with just a few games left in the season last year and we had some participate and others largely ignore it. Question 1: Should I continue the game this year? Question 2: If I continue the game, which scoring method should I use? Let me explain.... When I started doing it late last season it was a very simple calculation of: Points + Rebounds + Steals + Blocks + Assists - Turnovers. However, in thinking about it, I think Steals, Blocks and Assists should have more than face value - I'm thinking a formula of: Points + Rebounds + (Steals * 1.5) + (Blocks * 1.5) + (Assists * 1.5) - Turnovers. I also wondered about tracking offensive vs. defensive rebounds and giving extra value to offensive rebounds but am less sold on that idea. What are people's thoughts out there in Blazer land? Thanks. Gramps...
I loved the contributor idea... an extra layer to the game, and giving the added weight to other statistics is great.. but it seems to me might be a bit more taxing for you.
You rock Gramps! I like the contributor idea as well...however you want to design it we trust you'll do a great job! I'd keep rebounds as one category whether offensive or defensive.
A bit more work but another item of interest and chance for glory ('cause I need all the chances I can get - always the bridesmaid, never the bride...)
I like it. I'd give 1 for assists, 2 for steals, 2 blocks, -2 for turnovers, 1 for any kind of rebound. If it becomes trackable, I'd give 3 for drawing an offensive foul. A Tip of The Cap to GrandpaBlaze, for all you do for us.
By the time you started it up, I was out of the running... but I like the idea. What if you used GameScore (from Basketball-Reference)? Game Score; the formula is PTS + 0.4 * FG - 0.7 * FGA - 0.4*(FTA - FT) + 0.7 * ORB + 0.3 * DRB + STL + 0.7 * AST + 0.7 * BLK - 0.4 * PF - TOV. Game Score was created by John Hollinger to give a rough measure of a player's productivity for a single game. The scale is similar to that of points scored, (40 is an outstanding performance, 10 is an average performance, etc.).
I love what you do even if I am not always able to participate. MY issue with this game is I had to put some thought and potential research into it and as much fun as that is, it just took too much valuable time from me, So I just started wildly guessing and sucked big time!!!! I hope you keep it up though!!! And I know I will participate in everything I can this season.
For people to predict, I'd prefer something less complicated. Half of us pull numbers out of a hat as it is, this would increase the randomness of those number picks. Gramps...
Requiring any math is going to produce basically "Dame - 30" as the default answer, though. I don't see how making me learn a slightly less awful formula is going to help. GmSc at least feels like "good performance = 40, bad performance = 5". But whatevs. You gotta do you.
You better damn well expect some competition... Don't think your just gonna run away with it this year!!!!
What about a Starters/Bench point split prediction? I love our bench and our starters, and this year might be really interesting given matchup-exploitation Stotts has been known to do.
I always liked picking a bench player to click...used to do that in the live chats with Mike Rice and Orlando Williams..bench mvp game by game
Are you suggesting a second contributor game? Top individual contributor & starter vs bench contribution? Gramps...
