I really don't see him as a starter. He's just lost too much time and you need a certain amount of innings per year to adjust to each level. But if his stuff is good enough he could become a long reliever or a setup man. The way the game is going, each team can never have enough relief pitchers.

I didn't catch any comment from Pat in this 'article'. It's a PR piece for the Orioles.
It basically says they still want him, but it's Pat's decision.

I think Pat gives basketball one more year. If he can break the rotation this year, he'll stick with basketball. If he's still riding the bench in Feb, he may pull the plug and try to get into the 2018 baseball spring training sessions.

I think Pat will break through this year, what I saw of his play late last year was a guy that's ready to be a rotational player.

If the Blazers have him back I think he gives it another year too.

    As far as the quote:
Connaughton, who just finished the second year of a three-year contract with the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers where only the first two years guaranteed, said he’s “not going to unrealistically chase a dream if it appears that dream is getting farther and farther away.”

Something I didn't realize, but Pat shot 51.5% from three this year.

and over 8 rebounds per 36. Correction, that was from the previous year, only 5.9 this year.

I know the quality of the minutes aren't a fair assessment, but if pat can shoot close to 40% from 3 for the season in real minutes he does so much more than Crabbe in terms of rebounding passing and just scrappy play.

Yep, I view him as first in line to be a cheap Crabbe replacement. If he can knock down wide open 3s, he brings more to the table than Crabbe, and he does so at 1/12 the price.

When he was drafted he clearly said that the dream for him was the NBA, but yeah, if he's still a bench warmer next year he should go for baseball

Really? I don't see the time off as a bad thing honestly. As long as he eases his way back into pitching, I don't think he will have any problem living up to his full potential.

Two years for a college starting pitcher? Yeah that's a big thing. Look at it this way it would be about a pitcher coming back from an injury who hasn't thrown in a long time. It's as much missed time to get his innings limits up as well as well as instructional time. Now if he's a reliever and can get pitchers out with pure stuff, he will be up a lot quicker. There are relievers who make the majors after being in the minors for forever.

Baseball is really fickle, especially for pitchers...he could be pushing 32 and pitching in the minors waiting for his chance...I say basketball is his ticket..I like his motor and work ethic...Stotts likes him..I think he can stick and improve...CJ and Crabbe rode the pine for two seasons...I think personally he's an east coast guy and would like to be closer to home...a place like Philly or the Nets even he'd get more playing time.

You said a mouthful there. I've followed the baseball draft for well over two decades and I've only seen a few sure things. Alex Rodriguez, Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper probably the only slam dunks people knew we're going to make it. But they were so ridiculously talented at the amateur level projecting them was easy.

I saw Pat with some pretty good understanding of how to play team defense this season. We need more of those guys.

That and he has poise, and court awareness. You can't teach that. And his shooting was very good. Pat seems to have a lot of good journeyman skills, and he doesn't make a lot of mistakes. The kind of guy who will help a team win, but won't demand a high salary. We need more of those guys. ;)

But he's not coming back from an injury, he's in the best shape of his life. His arm probably feels much better right now, than it ever has.

Of course he's lost pitching strength, but that comes back pretty easily... If he starts a pitching regime right now, it would probably take him close to a year to get his arm strength back up; because he would be taking it so slow at the beginning to avoid injury.

You never know though, maybe he's lost it. Or maybe if he kept pitching at that pace, he would've blown his arm out; and he really needed some time off the mound.
