<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Max @ Dec 22 2007, 07:11 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>B-. Not really into old school rap. Lyrics were good at times, but lines like these killed it - "It's Shakespeare reincarnated, except I spit flows and strip hoes naked" Modern rap is too self-aggrandizing. Anyway, this thread's more for non-rap/hip-hop music. Back on JBB there used to be two threads for recommendations: this one and the Hip-Hop Recommendation thread. I'll bump that one back up. The whole point of having two is because fans of multiple genres of music are rare on these forums. You'll find a lot of people with appreciations for both rap and rock, but in general, you'll get better perspectives and recommendations if you segregate the two. They just come from two different angles. New Song: Kings of Leon - Knocked Up <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_Mzklb9nkXM&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_Mzklb9nkXM&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
Kings of Leon- C+ Its a bit monotone throughout the verse's. Alot of the lyrics are either ridiculously cliche (ex. Being a renegade, or make love to her) that stuff usually turns me off. Gives me the "Its been done" vibe. You can tell they are highly influenced by thatr bluesy 70's classic rock. Shadows Fall- Redemption <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NokgA2r0BmY&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NokgA2r0BmY&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B+ Good song, but I never understood metal with such melodic choruses. I just don't appreciate the juxtaposition. The video was pretty cool though, and the guitar work was great. New Song: Sublime - Let's Go Get Stoned <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kr2ucT4Hfkc&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kr2ucT4Hfkc&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B+ Pretty relaxing song. I've yet to really listen to Sublime, but that had a very cool vibe to it. I didn't really like the sudden stops, but from 2:30 onwards it was pretty awesome. Black Sabbath - Snowblind (The video's kind of stupid. I don't think the dude got the metaphor) <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iwDEhvvQrEw&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iwDEhvvQrEw&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B - it's a good, but not great song. Perhaps not quite to my taste, but a solid song all the same. Journey South - First Time Ever I Saw Your Face <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FNjSp5CyvyM&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FNjSp5CyvyM&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div> they sing other songs like Desperado and Let It Be better but there are no good videos of them on youtube
C-. Sounded pretty generic and pretty boring to me. Robert Randolph and the Family Band- I Need More Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5X8LB6nBl4
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (tim @ Jan 1 2008, 11:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>C-. Sounded pretty generic and pretty boring to me. Robert Randolph and the Family Band- I Need More Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5X8LB6nBl4</div> A- I'd call it overplayed, but that'd be unfair, because I was the one who overplayed it, haha. I've seen these guys four times now and have yet to be disappointed. If you ever get a chance to go to one of their shows or happen to see them on a festival bill, you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice by not going. I love the mix of gospel/soul/funk. They're like a modern day Sly with a real southern gospel feel to their music. "Thrill of It" is another classic by them you should check out if you're just getting into them. New Song: The Allman Brothers - Whipping Post <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Kv3RWqFlvJs&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Kv3RWqFlvJs&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B+ If i was more into classic rock i might give it a higher rating, but overall it is a very well put together song. I do have a ton of respect for the Allman Brothers aswell New Song: Thrice - Red Sky Ever since their first album, they have improved their style. Each time getting better, this post-hardcore, experimental rock band from Irvine California, has become more then a band but musicians. I suggest to check them out, every album they have put out. <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9-T_8Rt3MpU&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9-T_8Rt3MpU&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B-; a pretty dark song, good sound nonetheless. That's not really my type of music, but that was pretty good. New Song: Led Zeppelin- That's the Way. My favorite song by my favorite band of all time. A very underrated song that has a great acoustic guitar by Jimmy Page, along with great vocals of Robert Plant. <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UMZ79SWp_mc&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UMZ79SWp_mc&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
C+ Never really been a major fan Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/O1mCQKuvzCM&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/O1mCQKuvzCM&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - B+ Love Lynyrd Skynyrd at times, one of the classics. To the previous song from LZ, good stuff as well. Here's one from Sigur Ros - I Gaer <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DAmkY8uyh2g&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DAmkY8uyh2g&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div> You've got to be in the right mood for this band, also I don't know anyone under 18 that's enjoys this music, so you youths may want to stay clear. Got to love that guitar being played with an E-bow.
C-, not really my stuff. It was kind of boring to me. New song: John Frusciante- The Past Recedes The guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff. He has like 6-8 cds and I only really like two of them. His album "Curtains" is a very good one. And that is where this song comes from. The only other one I really like is "Shadows Collide with People" <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IIvzwjVFvqk&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IIvzwjVFvqk&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
A- Great song. I don't listen to a whole lot of acoustic work, but Frusciante's such a great guitarist and I think I'll definitely be checking this out. His voice is great as usual and I loved that little solo in the middle. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Little Wing (live @ Royal Albert Hall) The video doesn't show anything in particular, but I love this recording of the song more than the studio version. <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NT86jjGz60k&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NT86jjGz60k&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
A++ One of my favorite Hendrix song's, so beautiful! That was an amazing version you posted. RHCP - Turn It Again <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/m_MfgDvB3u4&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/m_MfgDvB3u4&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div> I like the song, but I mainly posted it for the solo at the end. Frusciante just shreds his guitar.
A- I wish it started a bit faster, but its all good from there. I don't listen to too much rock, as 90% of my music collection is hip hop. The remaining 10% is primarily rock that I grew up on: XTC, Blur, Francis Dunnery, Marshall Crenshaw, REM, etc. My favorite band is Blur, hands down. Here's but a taste of their greatness: EDIT: I just uploaded two new songs myself, so I figured I would put those forward instead Blur- Oily Water and Miss America <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nvt_dY7ybKE&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nvt_dY7ybKE&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
A+ Awesome! This is why I've missed this thread. One question though, is this one or two songs? I saw both on your top ten list, and I wasn't sure what to expect from them, because really, I never know what to expect from Blur. My three favorite songs from them are Coffee and TV, Park Life, and of course, Song 2, all of which are dramatically different sounding tracks. Then you have the fact that Damon Albarn's the mastermind behind Gorillaz. I really need to start downloading more of their stuff. For whatever reason, I've always accepted them as a good band, defended Coffee and TV as one of my favorite songs of all-time, and yet, I've only got maybe a combined ten songs in my music folder. That'll change tonight. I rented this movie a few years ago on the 90's British rock movement that you might like, called "Live Forever." It basically featured bands like Oasis, Blur, etc. and touched on how they never really hit that big in the states but were huge over in Britain for all those years. Hmm, I have so much new music that I want to share, but damn, I guess I'll just go with a song from a band that I sort of just saw (I saw the drummer and bass player each do solo sets at Rothbury). Grateful Dead - Box of Rain <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WTIvU5scwQ8&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WTIvU5scwQ8&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
C- Never been a big Grateful Dead fan. First time our tastes in music differed Voodoo . The Doors-Peace Frog <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8U9OHtZz36U&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8U9OHtZz36U&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B A friend once told me, never set your favorite songs as ringtones. I sorta made that mistake with "Peace Frog" and am paying for it right now. It really saturates the meaning of a song when you're hearing soundbites of it every time you get a phone call. I was never that into "Peace Frog" for a Doors song though. I've always thought the song was sort of atypical for the band, as were a lot of songs off of Morrison Hotel, like "Land Ho!", "Roadhouse Blues," and "You Make Me Real." I can't really put my finger on it, but it's like this drunken sing-along roadside bar feel they have, like the kind of music a biker would listen to in the late 60's, early 70's. Still, like with the Chilis, even The Doors' songs that I'm not enamored with, I still like. I was going to post another Kings of Leon song, but I don't know why, I just feel like posting the Doobie Brothers instead. Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tnD0eVdHJfI&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tnD0eVdHJfI&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
A Awesome song! Never knew its name, thanks. Fool's Garden- Lemon Tree <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bCDIt50hRDs&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bCDIt50hRDs&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
B - Not bad. Never really heard the song before, but it felt light and fun and I liked how it picked up over time. The random stops were kinda cool. These are two separate songs, but you gotta listen to them together because they flow into each other. Jimi Hendrix Experience - "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)" & "Moon, Turn the Tides... Gently Gently Away" <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SmRoGtiJp_E&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SmRoGtiJp_E&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div> <div><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PPNYW0Lt40c&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PPNYW0Lt40c&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" /></embed></object></div>
