Redskins fans with their own "Terrible Towel"

SHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins will go towel-to-towel with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday night.

When they host the Steelers and their Terrible Towel-waving fans in an preseason game at FedEx Field, the Redskins will distribute white "Redskins Rally" towels to the first 50,000.

Steelers fans have a reputation for showing up wherever their favorites play. They always bring their yellow/gold Terrible Towels.

Washington coach Jim Zorn, a former Seattle Seahawks assistant, saw that first hand in 2006 when Seattle played Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XL at Ford Field in Detroit. Pittsburgh fans dominated the stands with their towels.

"There's a little déjà vu because when we played the Super Bowl in Detroit, it was a sea of yellow," Zorn said after a morning practice Thursday at Redskins Park.

Last Nov. 3 in a Monday night game, the Steelers defeated the Redskins 23-6 at FedEx. An account in the next day's Washington Post described the scene following a Pittsburgh pass interception: "A great roar filled FedEx Field, and three levels of stands rising to the sky were filled with the twirling golden rags called Terrible Towels that have become a talisman to Pittsburgh Steelers fans."

Zorn looks forward to seeing Redskins towels Saturday night.

"I think it’s fun that we’re doing the same thing," he said.

"It's a preasason game, but you know what, we've got great fans. I think Dan (team owner Daniel Snyder) wants to continue to show his support and his enthusiasm for this team, for this community, so I think it’s all in ... good fun.

"He's competitive. We're competitive. Now, I don't know if there’s going to be battle of the towels or whatever. But it'll be fun."

Just to clarify, the Redskins will be surrounded by thousands of their own fans waving the white flag.
