BREAKING NEWS: Russia paid the Taliban BOUNTIES for killing American troops in Afghanistan in plot orchestrated by secret unit which poisoned a defector spy - and White House has known for MONTHS
    • U.S. intelligence concluded a Russian unit paid bounties to Taliban elements for killings of U.S. troops
    • Would amount to a major escalation for Moscow
    • Trump administration took no apparent action in response
    • Donald Trump was briefed on the activity, the New York Times reports
    • The president has repeatedly called for having good relations with Moscow
In another brazen attack on the U.S., a Russian military intelligence unit has secretly paid bounties to Taliban-linked fighters to kill U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, according to a bombshell New York Times report.

The report represents a deadly escalation in Moscow's repeated efforts to undermine U.S. policy, and came as the administration was seeking to find ways to extract itself from the decades-long war by making peace with the Taliban.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the activity, the New York Times reported Friday, citing officials briefed on the matter – but the U.S. took no evident action.

There were times when the bounties were in fact paid, according to the paper, although it did not identify specific U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan were killed as a result of the Russian bounty payments, according to the paper. The money went to Islamist militants.

The matter was discussed at the White House national security council. Twenty Americans were killed last year in the bloody Afghan war, which began in 2001.

According to the paper, U.S. policy members developed a 'menu' of options, from a diplomatic slap to further increases in U.S. sanctions or other unnamed responses. But officials said the White House has taken no response to date.

The group paying the money was described as a Russian military intelligence unit, which the paper did not identify by name.

definitely should be the dominant discussion for the week-end news cycle but never doubt trump. his executive order and the fact that he chose to stay in washington tonight suggests to me another "friday night massacre" event for the weekend is coming.
he seems to insist that there is no such thing as bad publicity as long as it deflects from the constant reminder of corona virus infections and deaths

Pretty fucking suspicious when the president praises Putin...let's him take out contracts on American soldiers in the field...pulls troops out of Germany and invites the same guy to join G7......if Trump were a Democrat he'd be tarred and feathered and disgraced for life over this...all this while Trump obsesses about Hunter Biden's job in Ukraine.....clownfuckingtown

There's going to be so much dirty laundry from Trump's presidency once this is over...it has been a shameful chapter of American history

In the final analysis, is anyone surprised Trump doesn't care? He cheers constantly for Confederate traitors who killed a lot more Americans.

no, it's not surprising. What IS surprising is the same group that said "why do you hate the troops" anytime you questioned the Iraq war (or the made up justification for said war), will totally turn a blind eye to this, because "pwn the libtards!"

Rest assured that some will try to spin it as justifiable.

I had mentioned previously that the only good thing i see coming from this administration is trump exposing all the loopholes in our laws and regulations. I don't think anyone ever fathomed having such a dispicable person in the White House.
