How much does he hope to get next year, and how much f'n money is enough? ...He had a career year last year and may not be nearly as good this year, plus there's always the possibility of injury...he's taking a big gamble IMO.

Going into last season he had a career mark of 52-42 & was given a 3M dollar raise after a good season. Last season was a career year & he was given a 9M dollar raise to 15M. And That's! not enough. Just ANOTHER greedy bastard. Yeah I'm with Messiah, I hope his arm falls off.

Yes, he gambled, no he's not greedy. The "greedy" tag is a little silly when talking about professional athletes. Baseball is a multi-billion dollar proposition, payroll is ownership's biggest expense. The players have a very limited window where they can command what the market deems their worth. These players have an obligation to fetch that when they can. If Scherzer can replicate the success of last season, there's no reason to believe he can't make Kershaw money. Scherzer netting a five year deal at the end of the season ends any mystery as to his intentions in this offseason. As for whether or not the Yanks pick him up, who comes off the books to make this work within the framework of the luxury tax? I know the Ghost of the Captain will go, but who else is up?

IF & only IF he can duplicate it, then you discuss the multi year contract. But to demand that kind of money after ONE career season. Please, greedy IS the right word.
It's not. Greedy isn't the word for a man who has exactly one more year to command blockbuster money. And yes, if he plays as capably as last season he'll get Kershaw money. Barring catastrophic injury, even if he regresses slightly to considerably, he'll get paid what the Tigers offered him this season or slightly more on the open market. He gets to legitimately ask for this kind of money one more time, this is it, wring every dollar out of this opportunity, it's not coming again for a mid-30's front line starter. Greedy isn't the right word, but petty is a great word for the Tigers organization. Releasing a presser calling your 29-year old stud of a frontline starter greedy is the tactic of a bygone era and does nothing but engenders bad blood.

When a city is in Detroits current fiscal state is and a man rejects that money and time while people who perform essential human services are probably wondering how much longer they'll have jobs it certainly does qualify as greed. The Tiger fans supported that team even though their city is in a low mode operation, drew what 3 mil plus. If I were a Detroiter I'd not pay a nickel to watch Scherzer on the days he pitches. Generally I don't begrudge salaries, as Tony Bennett once sang "Nice Work If You Can Get It" but in the Motown Situation Greed certainly applies.
