"Cameron Maybin is the flip side of the Mike Stanton story.

Maybin is the outfielder for whom the Marlins have had precious little room - he was absent the starting lineup for an eighth consecutive game Thursday night - in the wake of Stanton's call-up from the minors.

Finally, though, the Marlins took the prudent course with Maybin, which is the one they should have taken earlier.

    They sent him down.

Better late than never would be the optimist's point of view.

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez wouldn't commit to giving Maybin a start in the three-game series beginning tonight against Tampa Bay, and, in fact, said before the game: "The best thing we can do for the young man is get him some playing time. If he's not going to get it up here ..."

It sounded as though a ticket to New Orleans was all but ordered.

    Turns out, it was.

Maybin called his benching "difficult" while also saying he made it a point to stay involved in the game as much as possible despite not being part of it."
