I could of put this somewhere else but I need an answer quickly. Can you play playstation 3 games on a playstation 2 console? may be a stupid question but I'm not sure.
All fact - No. Why? One is far more powerful then the other. It would be like playing a PC game that requires a minimal 4.0 GHz on a 2.2 GHz PC.
You could however play PS2 games on PS3. That's not what you asked tho...so yeah. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

I have a question. I have heard that if you buy a PS3 without having a certain type of television it is the same as if you had a PS2 can anyone tell me if this is true?

No it's not true. There is a HUGE difference in the gameplay. It looks much nicer. However if you have an HDTV, then it's even better.
It's impossible, PS3 uses a BluRay drive, while PS2 uses a standard DVD drive. Plus as Hustler said, there would be no point in releasing the PS3 if you could play them on a PS2.
