http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_14224166 this is lunacy unless he starts 40 games or less, the giants have a player who can possibly be above league average offensively in Posey.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/giants/indexn?blogid=22 Giants were also present at a large Ben Sheets workout: http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/...e-pitcher-proves-he-s-still-got-it-for-scouts Can't complain about this signing IMO. I was ready to move on from Bengie but he will give us 15-20 HRs and ~80 RBIs in the middle of the lineup. Plus our pitchers are familiar with him.
yeah you cant really hate it too much besides the fact that we have posey waiting in the wings. offense from a catcher is a plus, even if he never walks. i would have been great with going into the season with posey though and using the 5 million in the draft or for an international signing bonus or two.
also sheets would be great in the 3/4/5 hole of the rotation. id idealy like zito to be a bad ass again and go... lincecum zito cain sanchez sheets
Lol we just shipped your boy for nothing Shape! Merk had a good stretch for like half a season in '08 but I had pretty much given up on him. Hell of an arm but no command. So what do you guys think of the offense we're going to go into next season with? Rowand Sanchez Sandoval Huff DeRosa Bengie Schierholtz Renteria P + Uribe, Torres, Ishi, Whiteside/Posey, Velez Still aint scaring anyone but the middle of the order looks like it can rack up RBIs all of a sudden.
Yeah it sucks Merkin never stayed healthy enough to live up to the hype. Maybe he'll be a late bloomer.
At least he won't be hitting cleanup and bottlenecking the basepaths. I suppose management feels Posey may not ready as a major league catcher, since that position is relatively new to him. The way he's tearing up ST, they got to find him plenty of playing time somewhere--maybe at first? Any defensive improvement over Huff would be welcome.
