Lakers guard Shannon Brown has decided to not exercise his $2.14 million player option for next season and will be a free agent. "My guess is he's probably going to become a free agent," agent Mark Bartelstein told the Los Angeles Times. Brown joins Lakers' guards Derek Fisher and Jordan Farmar on the free agent market. Brown signed the two-year, "biannual exception" last year with the Lakers. He made $1.990 million last season and was due to make $2.149 million next season. The Lakers own his "early bird" rights and could sign him for up to five years and as high as the mid-level exception; the current mid-level exception pays $5.8 million in the first year. He should have played out his current contract. Without Farmar around it would have given Brown a golden opportunity for more PT and another summer to improve his ball handling and shooting skills. Imagine being able to train with Kobe all summer and learn from him. If he developed properly he'd command a longer, higher paying contract next summer. He received some shitty advice from his agent. Right now it looks like Sasha is going to be the primary back up for Fisher next season.
