As I've said, I'm not excited about this year's roster. I expect them to be interesting, but certainly not a real contender. I thought I'd try a rating scale and see what y'all think.

    10 - MVP candidate/ 9 - Elite player (top-10)/ 8 - All-star player (11-30)/ 7 - Very good player and borderline all star (31-50)/ 6- Solid NBA starter/ 5 - Good player...MLE type..solid rotation player/ 4 - borderline rotation player/ 3 - non-rotation bench player
    2 or 1 - deep bench/project

    Butler - 7-9
Wade - 5-7 (potentially better in playoffs)
Rondo - He earned his "head case" designation in Dallas. Head cases need wide ranges. 3-7
    Gibson - 5-6
    Mirotic - 4-7
    Lopez - 5-6
    McDermott - 4-6
    Portis - 3-6
    Felicio - 3-5
    Valentine - 3-5
    Snell - 2-4

I won't even try to rate the other guys. How far off am I?

This season could be really interesting.

I can see perhaps some good things ahead like Hoiberg did:

Your scaling looks good. I don't expect Rondo like a big "head case" this season (hopefully) ;-) ).

    Zipser 2-4

This Bulls' team figures to be interesting, I'll give 'em that. Part of the reason for my OP was that it struck me that almost everyone on the roster has a wide range of reasonable expectations. I haven't seen too many good teams with this sort of volatility. Usually, you can point out one or two "wild card" type players. I see Rondo, Wade, Mirotic and McDermott as probable rotation players who qualify as wild cards. This says nothing of Portis, Felicio and Valentine who are either largely or completely unproven.

I could see this Bulls team finishing (a distant) 2nd in the East and I could see them as a lottery team. It all depends on which end of the performance ranges each player finishes and how they gel as a team. They'll certainly be worth watching early. Let's hope they're worth watching late.

    This would be good.

I'm positive about Wade and Rondo. Wade will be good player. No All-Star but good. Same with Rondo - I don't foresee the "head-case" for the upcoming season. Many expect that Hoiberg will habe problems with Rondo, but I don't see it.

Hopefully Mirotic or McDermott will be better and more consistent. I'm curious about Valentine and expect some more nice games from Felicio.

And Zipser will get some games, too.

    Go Bulls!

I just checked the current Vegas Insider odds to win the 2016-17 NBA championship. They have the Bulls at 100-1 and that makes sense to me. In the East, the Cavs (14-5), Celts (25-1) and Raptors (75-1) rank ahead of them. The Hawks, Pacers and Knicks are also at 100-1.

    No argument here.

This odds are ok. Hopefully Bulls end the season ahead of the Knicks.

I'd rate Mirotic at 5-7 and Portis at 3-5.

Felicio I think is 4-6, and many people will laugh, but I think he has a *slight* chance at being 7, but I don't see the clouds opening up for him like that this year.

Zipser I imagine should be rated 2-3. Ditto Dinwiddie and Grant.

Also, Canaan wasn't mentioned, but I think he might be a wildcard for us this year, particularly because of his volume shooting. He's the only guy that can hoist up threes in our backcourt.

My guess is he rates out as a 4, but his value might be disproportional because his skill is so unique on this team.

I have few issues with any of the numbers bandied about here.

Right now I have Mirotic as a 5 and McDermott at a 4.

    How about the coach?

What number, from 1-10, would you place on Hoiberg?

What about the "Hoiball" system in general? What number?

    This isn't quite positive. ;-)

I only watched 2 or 3 games last season. So I can't really say something about the Hoiball system.

I have hope that the Bulls at least will win 42 again.

A number for Hoiberg? Don't know.

    Butler - 8
    Wade - 7
    Rondo - 6
    Gibson - 5
    Mirotic - 5
    Lopez - 6
    McDermott - 4
    Portis - 4
    Felicio - 4
    Valentine - 5
    Snell - 3
    Canaan - 4

    Hoiberg - 3
Hoiball - 1 (basically scrapped after 1 season, given this team is going to be run by ball dominating players who are not great 3 point shooters)

We may or may not make the playoffs.

We lost two all-stars this summer. Noah, Gasol, and former MVP Rose.

Only all-star we have now is Jimmy.

We got Wade, and Rondo. Someone said, both will be good, but not all-stars. I agree. If we can sneak in at least 7 or 8th seed in the playoffs, Wade and Rondo both know how to turn it up a notch or two. That is something we have not had in the playoffs until now. As transplant said, this could be an interesting season.

That's kind of my feeling on things. I don't trust this coach to be able to make this roster work.

The last tweet by Wade is interesting. I have a feeling this team will do just that. I am not saying they will go far, just saying we missed the playoffs last season, this season, maybe not.

Hoiberg is a 2-3 right now, albeit with some upward potential to be a 5-6 if things go well.

Hoiball I think is irrelevant at this point. A hollow concept to begin with that's not going to see any court time his first two years in the league.

Hoiberg didn't have a good rookie season, but it was a tough situation. Anyone who says he's certain of what kind of NBA head coach is lacks credibility IMO.

To judge Hoiberg, you first have to judge the roster and then see what the HC does with that roster. I think his bar is the playoffs and/or a .500 record.
