MWC, ESPN close to media deal

The Mountain West Conference and ESPN are finalizing a seven-year media rights deal for the network to annually televise up to 22 football games and 25 men's basketball games, sources told ESPN.

The deal brings the total value of the Mountain West's media rights deal, including its existing deal with CBS Sports Network, up to about $116 million, or $18 million annually, sources said.

ESPN, Inc. has reached an agreement in principle with the Mountain West for rights to televise select conference football and basketball games from 2013-14 through the 2019-20 season. ESPN will acquire exclusive worldwide rights to televise up to 16 Mountain West football games, plus every Boise State home game, as well as up to 31 conference-controlled men's basketball games annually. ESPN will have the right to make every game available to video subscribers via WatchESPN.

Mountain West -Pac-12 partnership

Mountain West approaches Pac-12
about West Coast partnership

PASADENA, Calif. -- Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said his conference has approached the Pac-12 about what he calls a "best practices" connection -- sort of a West Coast alliance for nonconference scheduling, sharing of officials, and bowl matchups.

Thompson said there's nothing official but thinks the Pac-12 is receptive to the idea. The 24 teams in the Mountain West and Pac-12 comprise most of the West Coast college football landscape.

The Mountain West feels solidified after renegotiating television rights with CBS and corraling Boise State and San Diego State back to the league.

Hawai'i football changing name back to Rainbow Warriors

Hawai'i football changing name back to Rainbow Warriors
artd.jpg

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay has reversed field from a previous decision and all men’s athletic teams will be renamed the Rainbow Warriors. This decision comes just months after Jay decided all men’s sports would simply be named the Warriors. From 2000 to 2012, some teams were named the Warriors and others the Rainbow Warriors. This occurred after former UH football coach June Jones requested the football team be known strictly as the Warriors. Prior to 2000, the football team was known as the Rainbow Warriors.

Mtn. West suspends Chris Demarest

The Mountain West Conference suspended Hawaii special teams and safeties coach Chris Demarest one game for inappropriate sideline conduct during a loss to Oregon State.

A conference official declined to give details, but the release says Demarest was suspended under a sportsmanship rule that governs obscene gestures and language toward other people during games.

Jay Ajayi's 4 TDs help Boise St. whip Air Force

ance Friday night lifted Boise State to a second straight win and set a new standard for pinpoint passing.

Southwick was sharp from start to finish, completing 27 of 29 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown, the most efficient passing game in school history and breaking the previous mark set when Jared Zabransky finished 21 of 23 in 2006.

Southwick, who completed his first nine passes, also ran for a touchdown in helping the Broncos (2-1, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) to a 42-20 victory over Air Force. For Southwick, who took over last year for highly-respected Kellen Moore and has struggled to win the hearts of fans, any serious reflection on his record-setting performance and his place in school record books will have to wait.

Wyoming fires Chris Tormey

Wyoming coach Dave Christensen fired defensive coordinator Chris Tormey on Tuesday after two straight losses in which the Cowboys surrendered more than 50 points a game.

"I felt that we needed to make a change at this time to give our football team and the young men on it the best opportunity to win our remaining four regular-season games," Christensen said in a statement. "The last two weeks, our defense has not performed up to the expectations of our coaching staff, our players, nor our fans."

Christensen named defensive line coach Jamar Cain as interim coordinator.

Tormey, who was not available for comment Tuesday, had been Wyoming's defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He will be paid through his contract, which expires in December, according to the university.

The coaching change comes after news last week that Wyoming president Bob Sternberg had hired an outside consultant to evaluate the school's football and men's basketball programs.

Wyoming (4-4, 2-2 Mountain West) has a bye this week. The Cowboys next play No. 16 Fresno State (7-0, 4-0) in Laramie on Nov. 9.

Wyoming fires Dave Christensen

Wyoming has fired coach Dave Christensen after the Cowboys went 5-7 in his fifth season in charge.

Christensen met with athletic director Tom Burman Sunday afternoon to be informed of the decision, a source told ESPN.

"We have come to a point where our football program has not achieved at the level of success that we expect, and we know from past experience that we can be successful," Burman said in a statement released by the school. "It is with that in mind that we move forward in search of a new leader for Cowboy Football."

Washington State collapses in New Mexico Bowl after 2 late fumbles

With less than 2 minutes to play and Colorado State down by eight points, Shaquil Barrett knew the Rams needed the ball back quickly to finish an improbable comeback against Washington State.

Once down by 22 points in the New Mexico Bowl, the Rams got their chance when Cougars running back Jeremiah Laufasa came barreling toward Barrett.

"I was kind of thinking in my mind, yeah, 'That was our shot to get back in the game right there,' " said Barrett, who stripped the ball. "I really didn't think I was going to get the opportunity."

That fumble, at the Cougars 33, set up Kapri Bibbs' 1-yard run score and Donnell Alexander's two-point conversion run that tied it at 45 with 33 seconds left.

Then, Washington State's Teondray Caldwell fumbled a kickoff return at the 24, setting up Jared Roberts' 41-yard field goal as time expired gave Colorado State a 48-45 victory Saturday in the bowl season's opening game.
