With Cate Reese out, uninspired Wildcats fall to UCLA, 64-46

Arizona guard Shaina Pellington disagrees with a call made by the referee in the first half of
Thursday night’s loss to UCLA in McKale Center

Arizona walked into Thursday night’s game against UCLA game facing a lot of questions.

First, who would start after coach Adia Barnes said all starting spots were wide open?

And who would step up to replace the points and intensity that Cate Reese, out with a dislocated shoulder, typically provides?

The first was answered right away: Koi Love replaced Reese in the starting lineup. That was the only change to the lineup.

Answers to the second question — and many more new ones — will have to wait. UCLA outscored the 12th-ranked Wildcats by 17 points in the second half on the way to a 64-46 win at McKale Center.

USC Women’s Basketball Falls 68-59 In Regular-Season Finale At No. 12 Arizona

The USC women's basketball team was powerful out of the gates but was stymied by turnovers in taking a 68-59 loss at No. 12 Arizona today in Tucson. That wraps the regular season for the Trojans, who hold a 12-15 overall record with a 5-12 mark in Pac-12 play entering the coming Pac-12 Tournament. Arizona improves to 20-6, 10-6.

Belibi dunk highlights No. 1 Stanford rout of Montana State

Stanford’s freshmen have been joining everybody else in begging Francesca Belibi to dunk all season, insisting they came to school here just to see her do it.

Belibi obliged at last on the big March Madness stage, blocking a shot at the 3-point line then driving the length of the floor to slam the ball home with one hand for her third career dunk. The play thrilled her teammates and the awestruck home crowd in the second quarter of top-seeded Stanford’s 78-37 win against 16th-seeded Montana State on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Arizona outlasts UNLV 72-67 in women’s NCAA tourney opener

Arizona looked like the inexperienced team early, not one that played for a national championship a year ago. Even when the Wildcats shook off the jitters, they had a hard time pulling away from UNLV.

Once the fourth quarter arrived, Shaina Pellington and Cate Reese took over, making sure Arizona’s long-awaited NCAA Tournament homecoming wasn’t a dud.

Pellington and Reese scored all but two of Arizona’s points in the fourth quarter, leading the Wildcats to a gritty 72-67 win over UNLV on Saturday night in the opening round of the women’s NCAA Tournament.

Defending champion Stanford tops Texas 59-50 in Elite 8

Standing at the top of the ladder, Lexie Hull got the final snip with the scissors, drawing one of the loudest cheers of the night as she draped the net around her neck.

Hull did all she could to get defending national champion Stanford back to her hometown for the Spokane Regional. Then, she became the catalyst for getting the Cardinal back to the women’s Final Four.

“I’m just super proud of our team for staying with it, sticking with each other and being gritty,” Hull said. “I think it really comes down to who was the grittier team.”

Hull scored 20 points, including a key three-point play inside the final three minutes, and Haley Jones hit four free throws in the closing moments to finish with 18 points in top-seeded Stanford’s win over No. 2 seed Texas 59-50 on Sunday night.
