After his playoff performance and because he's already won a championship, I imagine that Portis declines his player option for next year. He's only 26 and his Per-36 minutes look good. He can hit the 3 and is mobile enough defensively, could be a starting forward for us. I feel a Jae Crowder style three year deal at the MLE would be great for us.

Wouldn't object - but it would be the $6M tax MLE that we can offer.
I'd expect him to get better deals in the market.

Yeah, I think there are a few of us in here that have been beating that drum. It makes a lot of sense if CJ is traded for Simmons but if CJ is traded for Siakam or Grant... let's just say, then we'd probably want to use that taxpayer MLE on a backup PG. That being said, I love what Portis brings.

If we can keep Powell and swap CJ for a switchable forward like any of those three, I think it makes sense. I figured that MLE was around 6 but when I googled it looked like it was 9 for last year, so I'm probably wrong in that regards.

That's the full MLE that's actually around 9.5M but what we'd have would be the taxpayer MLE which is about 5.9M.

He beats up his teammates. The Portland fan base would have a field day with that. Canzano would write a long diatribe about how he’s an awful human.

If you can get him for the MLE, sure. I’m guessing he’ll cost more though.

    1. Mirotic charged at him, so self defense.

    2. Clownzano and blazers edge getting triggered again? Sign me up.

The Bucks would not let Portis go unless he was given some ridiculous offer. He won’t.

No chance of getting him. He’s getting 9-10 mil this year

He might opt in because he won the championship.

If he opts out, he will command more than the Blazers can give him.

The Bucks don't have a choice. He's a non bird player... they signed him to the BAE this last off season so they can give him like 4.5M with the non bird exception or the taxpayer MLE just like us. They are further into the tax than we are. So yeah all things being equal they would probably get him with the TPMLE over us because he just won a chip there but BroLo is their starting C. So if we can offer him a starting spot we'd probably land him over them.

The Bucks most likely won't retain him it will be another team with the full MLE that might make a higher offer.

I think Olynyk provides what Portis would more consistently and for potentially cheaper. Maybe not TP MLE level cheap, but still less than Portis.

I'd stay away from guys who just burst on the scene sporadically in playoff games. While the championship experience is good, the small sample size of their effectiveness (and the specific matchups they were actually useful in) makes me want to look elsewhere.

Not to be critical, but this would be the dumbest move ever.

Their fans literally chanted his name when he comes into the game. We'd have to offer some ridiculous overpay to get him - which we can't.

So, the effect of the offer would be that if he signed it, the Bucks would tie up all of our $$$ for a couple of weeks, while other teams would sign the FAs we want.

He's not restricted, so no money can be tied up.

Well taxpayer MLE is better than what he's getting with the Bucks. He had 15 million from the Knicks for the one year. I can't imagine he goes for 5.9 MIL but I'd take him on that deal for 3-4 years if it was an option. I wouldn't say he burst onto the scene either, he's been productive in the past.

How much is a 6'10" PF/C that can average 14ppg on 39% from 3pt worth?

Portis actually be productive for awhile now. But Olynyk may be a better and cheaper option. He can do everything that Portis does. One thing that Olynyk does better is passing. We love our big men that can pass. Olynyk would be deadly off the bench playing next to Dame and our other guards.

i might have over exaggerated Portis being a flash in the pan, but he just had three games in their series vs BK where he got DNPs. We used our full MLE on a guy who was similarly used sparingly in the playoffs last year, and it clearly didnt work out for us.

There's also going to be a ton of competition for Portis. Olynyk does everything Bobby does, and more and probably won't get as much hype. Much more likely to be able to land him.

Ibaka is another favorite of mine but as has been pointed out in other threads, probably hard to land him for the TP MLE also.

This thread should be merged here: http://www.sportstwo.com/threads/free-agent-thread.367431/
