Tribe reach agreement with free-agent ByrdStory Tools: Print Email XML Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.comPosted: 55 minutes ago DALLAS - Free-agent right-hander Paul Byrd has reached agreement with the Indians on a two-year, $14.25 million contract with a club option for a third season, FOXSports.com has learned.http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5137224Byrd, who turned 35 on Saturday, can earn as much as $22 million if the Indians exercise his option for 2008. If the club declines his option, he will receive a $250,000 buyout, a sum that is included in his guarantee. The Indians also could be emerging as a front-runner for free-agent closer Trevor Hoffman. General manager Mark Shapiro and manager Eric Wedge met with Hoffman for 4 1/2 hours Saturday in California. The Padres still want to retain Hoffman, and the Tigers and Orioles also are pursuing him.Byrd chose the Indians over the Rangers, Mariners and Royals, replacing free-agent right-hander Kevin Millwood, who is seeking a five-year deal. The Indians are trying to re-sign free-agent right-hander Scott Elarton, their fifth starter. Hoffman would replace free-agent closer Bob Wickman.Byrd went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 31 starts for the Angels last season, pitching 204 1/3 innings. He beat the White Sox on three days' rest in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, working six-plus innings.Byrd, 72-64 lifetime with a 4.23 ERA, has posted an ERA below 4.00 in each of the past three seasons. The Angels replaced him with a more inexpensive option, signing free-agent right-hander Hector Carrasco to a two-year, $6.1 million deal.
