"He's the one who has coached a lot longer than I have," Kerr said, alluding to Hoiberg's successful five-year run at Iowa State. "I know he's a first-year NBA coach. But he's been coaching at a high level for a long time. So he's probably more equipped than I was."

That, of course, sells short Kerr's five NBA titles as a player and apprenticeship playing for all-time greats Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. But Kerr, who has known Hoiberg over the years and called one of Iowa State's NCAA tournament games, predicts a similarly smooth transition.

"I have a lot of admiration for him," Kerr said. "I like the way (Iowa State) played. They were wide open. He's an offensive-minded guy. You can see that. I like his demeanor. You can see he gets along well with his players. I think he's going to be great."

"That's what coaching is about — relationships," Kerr said. "It's not about drawing up a play, although that's part of it. The vast majority of it is your relationships with players and the other staff members. Those are so critical."

Kerr said Hoiberg is accomplished enough that he didn't have any advice for him. But he did share advice he received.

"Everybody told me to be myself," Kerr said. "That was the one piece of advice that was universal. Everybody had different thoughts, but the one thing everybody said was make sure you coach according to your own personality.

OT, but the reason I criticized Bulls' management when they hired Vinny DelNegro was that, though he played in the NBA and served in the front office of a NBA team, he had never coached, head coach or assistant, at any level. Because of this, I felt that Del Negro was ill-prepared to be the head coach of a NBA team.

Steve Kerr played in the NBA and served in the front office of a NBA team, but he had never coached, head coach or assistant, at any level.

May I again congratulate the World Champion Golden State Warriors and their rookie head coach, Steve Kerr...and pass the crow, please.
