Bloomberg pays fines for 32,000 felons in Florida so they can vote

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg has reportedly raised more than $16 million in an effort to help convicted felons in Florida register to vote.

The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition estimated Bloomberg's fundraising push has already paid off monetary obligations for 32,000 felons, Axios reported.

"The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and no American should be denied that right," a Bloomberg spokesperson told the news outlet. "Working together with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, we are determined to end disenfranchisement and the discrimination that has always driven it."

Florida passed a law in 2018 reinstating voting rights for felons that dictated they could register only if they pay all fines, fees and restitution — sometimes totaling more than $1,000 — owed to the government.

I know LeBron has also looked into paying.

The citizens of Florida decided that people who have served their time, except those with murder and rape convictions, should have voting rights restored. In a racist "justice" system they are disproportionately Black and overwhelmingly poor. The Republican legislature and governor then stepped in and said they had to pay all outstanding fines, fees, and court costs. These are designed to be unpayable with interest and penalties piling up until a person might owe 10 or even 100 times original fine.

The law was challenged by ACLU on the grounds that poll taxes were outlawed via constitutional amendment in the 1960s. The courts ruled that the fees were not a poll tax but were instead part of the sentence that must be discharged.

Then it turns out the state has not been keeping records on who "owes" what. They said it could take until 2026, yes you read that right, 2026 to sort it out. So people who have tried to find out what they owe have been largely unable and people who tried to step in and pay up for others have met roadblocks.

Republicans really hate it when people vote.

The first presidential debate will be held on Tuesday, September 29 at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. The format for the first debate calls for six 15-minute time segments dedicated to topics announced in advance in order to encourage deep discussion of the leading issues facing the country.

Chris Wallace, moderator of the first 2020 presidential debate, has selected the topics for that debate.

Subject to possible changes because of news developments, the topics for the September 29 debate are as follows, not necessarily to be brought up in this order:

    The Trump and Biden Records

    The Supreme Court

    Covid-19

    The Economy

Race and Violence in our Cities

    The Integrity of the Election

All debates start at 9:00 p.m. ET and run for 90 minutes without commercial interruption.

They aren't selling out. Bernie has backed Biden now that he is no longer running. His supporters are accordingly voting for Biden.

I would hope that Bernie's views are more in line with Biden anyway right?

Is that anything like Mitt Romney selling out? Lindsey Graham? Moscow Mitch McConnell? Marco Rubio? Ted Cruz? Ben Carson? Rand Paul?
I would say John Kasich and Jeb Bush but they aren't voting for Trump. Didn't last election either. Have not seen who Rick Perry, Chis Christie or Rick Santorum are endorsing yet?
