I really like Derrick Lewis and for the first two rounds I thought he was fighting with a little more strategy than we'd seen before but he burned out fast. Hunt was able to make him miss and all of the power shots that Lewis threw that whiffed contributed to him becoming exhausted, along with the body shots Hunt landed. Hunt fought a brilliant fight against a super dangerous opponent. Pretty fun to see Hunt win.
Mark Hunt vs. Derrick Lewis Lewis looked like he wanted to end the fight early. He was less patient than he was in his fight with Travis Browne (more on him later). That fight was difficult and I think Lewis wanted to avoid having his leg chopped up again. Early in the Hunt fight he spammed head-kicks and knees, switch knees, switch kicks, and swing for the fences type punches. The uppercuts he attempted would've knocked out a horse. But Hunto controlled the centre of the octagon, kept Lewis just out of reach, ducked and leaned and kept himself from taking much damage. Lewis's posture started to change as the fight wore on with him standing worse than straight up, with his stomach out and shoulders back, trying to alleviate some pressure on his back. He was tiring and Hunt was landing body shots and leg kicks but I think he would've been fine had it not been for what he later described as a six-year old lower back injury. The end came when Lewis, back against the cage, covered up in a way that made it obvious he was saying "no mas" and forced Mark Goddard to intervene. Overall it was an extremely dangerous opponent for Mark Hunt who prevailed and picked up a hometown win. Worth noting that the UFC gave Hunt a fight in Auckland while he is in the midst of not only suing them but frequently dragging their brand through the mud. If he wanted to retire, that would've been the time, but the 43-year old is keeping on. More paydays in his future. Speaking of mud, Travis Brown popped up on Instagram last night to chirp Lewis and ask for a rematch. Where have you been for almost half a year, buddy? Derek Brunson def. Daniel Kelly Not much to say. Dan Kelly's unlikely rise in the MW division was brutally cut-off. Derek Brunson isn't a disciplined striker so I guess some thought that old goat Kelly could drag him into a long fight. Brunson hit him with a left jab right straight IIRC and it was goodnight, Irene. It was a sensible fight for Brunson to take coming off two losses and a somewhat inevitable outcome for Kelly who flew a little too close to the sun. Dan Hooker def. Ross Pearson Hooker's well-timed knockout of Pearson should be up for knockout of the year in December. Hooker isn't exactly a prospect but that doesn't mean he lacks the potential to improve. I think this win will get him a boost in competition and we'll see how he does with it. His losses have been to great competition in Maxi Blanco, Yair Rodriguez, and Hick Diaz, so it is likely he's better than his 4-3 record in the UFC. The loss was Pearson's fourth in a row, first by stoppage, and drops his record since 2014 to 4-8 (his last two wins have both been split decisions). I'm not sure if the UFC is willing to keep dropping the level of his competition to have him around. Ion Cutelaba def. Henrique da Silva Three of the fights tonight lasted less than 80-seconds and this was the shortest one with Ion Cutelaba steamrolling Henrique da Silva. Not sure where the heat for this fight came from but both guys were amped up. It was The Hulk's first stoppage win in the UFC after finishing 11-of-13 outside it. Ben 10 def. Tim Elliott Well this was a surprise. Tim Elliott is a veteran fighter, good but not great at everything, the same guy who went 25-minutes with Demetrious Johnson, and Ben Nguyen finished him fast. Nguyen had a little misstep against Louis Smolka (if they fought again I think Nguyen would win) but otherwise has looked good in his first run in the UFC. This is the kind of performance that can vault him up to another tier of competition. Vinc Pichel def. Damien Brown This is the only other fight I caught. Pincel caught Brown coming in with a right uppercut, I think. Clean KO for the Californian who had been out of the UFC with injuries for several years. I don't like the six-fight main cards, I think it is too much, but when 4/6 are two rounds or less, it makes it digestible. Did anyone expect the HW fight to be the longest? Good card overall although I didn't see much of the prelims.
