Reminds me a bit of a smaller Nurk - plays defense, nice passer, smart player. He's not as good as Nurk on the block of course, but he's very versatile, being able to guard PFs, LBJ, and Ja. Very happy to have him on the team. I thought he was a throw-in, but that's because of his poor shooting, and because the injury-riddled Clips still didn't play him. I thought his lack of 3 point shooting would kill us, but it hasn't. I posted this in another thread but the last two relatively healthy/full seasons Winslow played he shot 38% from 3, on decent volume. Makes me optimistic he’s a better outside shooter than his overall percentages suggest. I wish we could depend on him to stay healthy because he’s good enough to start.
If getting that guy from Detroit results in Justice Winslow losing more than 22 seconds of playing time, than I hope Jerami has a nice career in the Motor City.
there is room on the Blazers for Winslow. He can fill the role of a hustling lunch-pail glue-guy. He plays physical, very unlike the parade of finesse perimeter players Portland has had. Decent handles, court vision and a willing passer. He doesn't have to be a good outside shooter to have a significant positive impact for Portland. However, I'm not sure Portland can afford two players in the rotation with Winslow's flaw
Evan Turner is my comp next year, and he'd be making 4x less than ET did his time here. 20 mpg off the bench.
One big difference in my mind is the position Winslow can defend. He can easily defend (and rebound) against most PFs so that means we can still have a minimum of 3 shooters on the floor with him considering SFs are generally better shooters than PFs. Not always but usually Nurk is also looking more comfortable with his mid-range set shot, so maybe even 4 shooters in there with Winslow.
Winslow’s rebounding, assist, and steal rates are all superior to Grants this season, and his block rate is identical. No reason why those specific categories wouldn’t translate to a bigger role, and they have with Portland. Not sure what Jerami brings that Winslow doesn’t outside of shooting, but even then he’s still a below average three point shooter for his career. My only concern with Winslow is his health. Only reason why I’d probably rather have him off the bench. I’m not crazy about the idea of giving up a lottery pick for something we pretty much already have. Also, I know Dame wants to play with Grant, but he’s not the GM and we should avoid giving any player too much power in personnel decisions. I mean there’s a pretty sizable history of that not working out ie the Lakers. Personally I would rather target more under the radar fours, like Hachimura..just as an example. Also, who knows where Watford and Brown will be in their development next season. And maybe Billups and co can get whoever they draft in the lottery to contribute early as well.
My moms old house was purchased by Kyle Wiltjer, who plays in Spain, and it’s empty all winter. Justise is going to see it tomorrow and we are showing it to him to rent it for a couple months. Hoping he’s a good dude
