The more I think about it the more I wonder if this whole thing was a recruiting ploy by Chip. For 4 hours on a busy Sunday in which there was NFL conference championships and the death of Joe Paterno there was 'leaks' that Chip was getting ready to sign with Tampa Bay. Even though there was zero quotes by Kelly regarding the job, or any substance to it outside of reports circulating in Tampa. Who knows, maybe Chip was just gauging his commodity in the NFL and possibly using it as future leverage with Oregon when its time to renew. Abruptly, late on Sunday evening about 4 hours after the rumors spread Chip decides he wants to stay. He could be rescheduling the visits for mid-week and say, I'm not like those guys from Cal who went to UW, I'm loyal to my school. No skin off Chips back. But, a gamble recruiting-wise that could pay off in the hopes of getting recruits that now have a fresh outlook. I know that could be a huge sell to parents.
Or poorly executed plan and a lack of professionalism? So far, I don't see where it has helped with recruiting. Debatable it has hurt with his cancelled trip - how does that make athletes feel when they get stood up? It's nice fans want to give him the benefit of the doubt, that this was all about the program and making Oregon better - but, let's be real. People need to understand this was about financial posturing and showed a lack of respect by Chip towards the Institution. Mullens said specifics of new financial arrangements weren't "discussed", but everyone knows our large donors had already approach the AD and told Chip the money would be there to retain him if this came down to an issue of money. Which it did. It's being said to wait a few weeks for a low key announcement regarding the new agreement - suddenly the old $2.8m of 2010, more in 2011, which Chip was thrilled about originally - wasn't good enough as Chip credits himself for Oregon's success. A new agreement is speculated to involve a higher base, more incentives and a fat cash retention bonus. So, if you want more $$, crap on loyalty and the contract you agreed to, solidify plans to jet, threaten to poach long term staff and cha-ching. Now we're supposed to bow down to his loyalty and scheming to trick recruits? Sure.....
Why did you quit police work? Doesn't the community demand your protection? Why did you abandon your country? You should've re-enlisted and protected our homeland. You sound like a whore making all these raises in compensation from job-to-job. Update: Someone just got raped. Where are you?
LOL! Right this moment? Wrapping up a speech for my Adv Pub Speaking course, hanging with my fam and getting ready to take my kids geocaching. Is that ok with you?
I'd rather talk to somebody stable and who doesn't call a grown man a "whore". Also, leave my daughter out of your posts in the future. I've never once mentioned her to you. I won't talk about your kids, and you won't talk about mine. Fair enough? Now go back to your "Flip Kelly" meltdown. It's highly entertaining, and it's helping bring some laughter to me!
Maybe you should seek some professional help about it, then, and stop projecting your own thoughts on it on a random message board poster.
You're not a random message board poster. Don't you get it? None of us are and it's enlightening you use these words. All of us are important individuals. Please don't live your life with such anger. Reach out and seek help from those who care. This isn't your fault.
Seriously dude--I'm not even involved here and you're starting to piss me off too. How hypocritical of you to complain about others not posting with honorable intentions, but then to follow up with this stuff. I thought you were better than this, Targus. I'm disappointed.
I wonder if Paterno got this much scorn in 1972 when he accepted an offer to coach the Patriots and then changed his mind 3 weeks later. I doubt it.
The internet/Twitter didn't exist in '72, so people didn't think they deserved to know every single detail about information. The entire Kelly/Tampa Bay thing says more about the news cycle these days than it does about "Flip Kelly" deciding to stay at Oregon. The Oregonian embarrassed itself yesterday morning with their two articles on Chip's "accepting" the TB job.
PapaG hit the nail on the head. There was no internet and there was no twitter. It would not have spread until it was a done deal either way, and not every recruit would be exposed to all the up-to-the-minute bullshit that went on that night. News traveled much slower back then.
Then again, as every single poster on S2 knows, it's much, MUCH easier to make an ass out of yourself in the age of the internet. I know from my own experiences as an ass.
