i think the national consensus is the city of Portland is a dumpster fire, perhaps literally.

Anyone else notice how often the goalposts get moved for hosting the game?

    Also, unrenovated?

    They update the thing often.

But shit, gotta wait *another* 7 years to potentially have it in Portland?

    At that point, why?

Ya that headline is a bit hyperbolic. I think Moda is really nice on the inside compared to a few other arenas even if its nearing 30

Yeah, I thought the article was weak even to use renovations as a reason. The fans don't care or they wouldn't be going to the games now.
And how does the Rose Quarters in the middle of the week have anything to do with it? I have been outside MSG when I had to step around a man masturbating on the sidewalk in his sleeping bag. Two blocks from the Staples Center in LA........not exactly safe when an event is not going on.

I forgot that Bill Oram came from LA, after covering the Lakers.

I don't even care at this point. It's a total joke of a weekend.

Real talk time, I love Portland. I know this city and its history better than most.

When they talk about Portland not having enough hotel rooms that is an overly simplistic take that has not been explained in detail to people.

It's not just rooms, it is also what goes with rooms, things like places to eat and entertainment.

Besides the game, where do 10-15 thousand people go to eat and for fun near the Moda center?

What is there to do in Portland?

The Portland area's biggest tourist attraction? Ilani Casino.

The new convention center hotel will be bankrupt and closed by the time we eventually get an All-Star game.

The citizens of Portland were sold a bill of goods about the convention center expansion and co-financing the convention center hotel. "Build it, and they will come!" But they're not. If you were going to hold a large convention somewhere would you pick Portland? Here are the Top 10 most popular convention cities:

    The top 10 cities are:

    1. Orlando, FL
    2. Washington, DC
    3. Las Vegas, NV
    4. Miami, FL
    5. Chicago, IL
    6. San Diego, CA
    7. Phoenix, AZ
    8. Atlanta, GA
    9. Dallas, TX
    10. New Orleans, LA
Portland's rank, 38th on some lists, and unranked on others.

This doesn't mean Portland is bad, or the NBA hates Portland, it just means we can't handle that big of an event.

All of what you say is true, but Salt Fricking Lake City? Explain to me the attraction that has warranted two All Star Games there.

They have successfully held large events previously. They can show they can handle it. Cleveland Browns average 67k, they have the infrastructure to handle an all-star game.

Here is the thing everyone and I mean everyone knows Jody must sell semi soon so the best case is we get a new owner with some money maybe not PA money but not a penny pincher and then it might happen. My guess is best case for the AS game 5 to 7 years from time the team is sold and that might be best case only chance it is sooner is if somehow Phil Knight gets the team then might be fast tracked a little sooner 3 to 5 years.

Also off topic but was not going to start a new one for it is I do not care what company buys naming right for the arena but ONE thing that should happen is name the court itself after Paul Allen and when the team is sold put a provision that the court is to hold the name for 5 to 10 years after the sale in honor of him. He had his flaws as owner maybe he listened to the wrong people from time to time but he always stayed loyal to Portland and even in the worst of times "Jailblazers " his love of the team never waivered. Some owners might have said fuck it and sold the team but he did not and that is special and it's for all the reasons I mentioned and many more I forgot that the court itself should be named after him.

Jody selling the team or not makes no difference to the all star game so I stopped reading and wasted more time replying to this.

You should read all of it. I like his idea of naming the court after Paul Allen.

I heard today that the reason Utah and the other locations already determined is because the public has financed renovations to the arena and area. It's the assoc. way of saying thank you for supporting the NBA. ?????
