I was just formulating a post whose overarching theme was set to be that we as a species are nuts and then you cherry picked this...and that somehow encapsulates it all. People, humans, fans, citizens, we, are strange creatures. Let's talk about what you said though.
A rookie 57th pick in the draft who skipped his last two years of college. Did you expect him to be an immediate NBA rotational player?
Regardless of which pick he was (see dozens of players), Jabari showed promise in the Summer League and in the playing time he has gotten in the regular season. But there will be no consistency for him, if you haven't noticed. Any development will be hidden behind closed doors, I suppose...until next Summer League.
Shaedon is great, but what's changed as the season's progressed? Little to nothing. Same player, good player but needs direction, needs development.
Little is the same Little from the end of last season or a bit worse. Remember he was vying for the starting 3 spot? Now that seem kind of silly--him starting at the 3--and we are terrible.
In other words, what development?
So priority 1 2 3 is upgrading the talent on the roster.
Chauncey has buy in from players and seems to develop youth well. Unless that changes there is no reason to consider a coaching change.
Things can happen simultaneously; we can upgrade the roster and hire an actual coach. 1 on your list could be talent and 2 and 3 could be coach or anything. Hell, we could add 4 and it wouldn't matter because 1 is already the roster.
From many angles, Billups looks to be in way over his head. This team has zero identity past being a Dame team, unless you focus on the negative, and in that case we are a sometimes high-scoring team that is completely incapable of playing defense for some reason. Just look at what happens when Dame sits. Billups has developed shit. There's no system he's implemented that hasn't been cracked and exploited by every other team in the league.
And it's easy peasy. Just make priority number 2 a search for a real coach. I mean, answer me this: what is it about Chauncey that makes him valuable and moves us forward? We've already established Chauncey isn't developing players well. Is it because the players like him? Because the players liked Caleb Canales. So it needs to be more than that. Why do we care about Billups so much?
Maybe the answer lies in why people supported Olshey for so long.
