Free Agent Who signs Ant Simons? Do we match?

that would be a great trade for Portland provided it meets CBA requirements with Ant's BYC. And it probably would if the first part of the trade was Milwaukee pick to Detroit for Grant (using Blazer TPE)

then use pick to fill hole at SG?
Not so sure. I want to keep Nas. He's really developing into a special player.

If the Blazers were smart Ant would be 6th man, but they’re not, so we are going to keep on trucking with a shitty defensive backcourt.

We don't know what Chauncey prefers. You are basing that statement on what Terry chose. Chauncey wanted Hart for a reason.

I would start Dame and Hart as well. But as long as all three of them get about 32 minutes per game at guard, I don't care who starts.

Who was going to sign CJ?

I fear the Blazers will do the easy (if expensive) thing: give Ant a bunch of money and call it a day. I hope I'm wrong.

I love how after 13 games, people are already ready to anoint Josh Hart as the starter.

In fairness, he has started over 1/3 of the games in his career. He has a track record of being a solid rotation guy.

Rotation guy at 27 does not necessarily excite me for a starter over Simons.

I agree. Size and defense are highly overrated. Forget that he played 23 minutes as a rookie and his minutes have increased every year. Forget he started every game last year and averaged 15 pts, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. We need one-way players starting, not 2-way players.

Would you trade ant for Detroit’s pick this year?
Only if we were also
  • trading Dame for youth and picks and doing a complete from-scratch rebuild, or
  • Flipping that pick for a star forward

Build that man a statue!!

Yes, for one simple reason. We are about to give Simons a huge pay increase with no evidence that he and Dame will work together any better than Dame/CJ. The chance to draft an all-star quality forward while having Hart start opposite Dame in a Wes Matthews role is very tempting!

Yet, Dame and Hart have played 0 minutes together.

Seems like a rationale thing to do.

Yep, no holes whatsoever.

Because CJ and Dame didn't work, Dame and Simons won't, and because Dame and Wes "did", Dame and Hart will.

This place...

Dame-Hart Dame-Ant Ant-Hart

Does it really matter which one starts next to Dame? We are going to see all three of those backcourt scenarios during each game IMO.

We saw the Ant-Hart combo for a few games and it worked well. Why wouldn't the Dame-Hart combo work too?

Because Simons is going to start. Simons has a higher ceiling than Hart does.

It's not rocket appliances

Higher ceiling doesn’t mean better fit

13 games. He's played 13 fucking games as a blazer.

He's not going to start ahead of Simons (unless Simons demands a trade).

This is just wasted bandwidth

I don’t disagree with anything you just said. I was just stating that higher ceiling, or even better player in some cases, doesn’t mean better fit

Nor does 13 games mean he's a better fit. Blazer fans are weird in that they glorify small sample sizes all the time.

I didn’t say Hart WAS a better fit. All I said was higher ceiling doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a better fit

296 games, 118 starts = small sample size.
211 games, 35 starts = persuasive sample size.

:dunno:

I always go back to what does it matter who starts, if the people involved are fine? There's plenty of minutes for a 3 guard rotation, especially considering Hart will undoubtedly play some minutes at SF.

But if we're going by what's been said, Cronin basically alluded to Ant starting (as much as he could with him being a free agent) and Billups believes Ant can be a good defender. Both said they think it's different than the Dame/CJ pairing.

I think there are probably some valid reasons to worry about Dame/Simons being too close a mirror to Dame/CJ

but, Simons is a different player than CJ, and as of yet hasn't shown the dribble-heavy iso game CJ had. Ant just seems faster with the ball than CJ

and Dame/CJ never had a 3rd guard like Hart, or a coach like Billups. I've pointed to this before, but in 2017-18 Portland had the 8th best defense in the league, and that's with Dame/CJ. That kind of back court doesn't have to be part of a shitty defense. It just takes a balanced roster and better schemes
