Why doesn't Josh Hart shoot the ball?

Before I start, let me preface this by saying I love Josh Hart.

I'm just confused why he's refusing to shoot. I recognize that's not his role on this team, especially with Ant/Dame/Grant, but he's at a pitiful 11% usage rate. That's lower than it was in his rookie year. For someone playing 36 minutes a game, that's literally hiding on offense level of usage. It's not like he can't shoot, or shouldn't shoot. He posted 60% TS with us last year on 25% usage. He's not going to get that many possessions this year but even last night without Ant and Dame he only had 7 shots in 38 minutes??

I also realize we're winning, so there's no immediate onus to change stuff that isn't working, but I feel like this is going to catch up to us as a team. Teams are already playing him for the pass and not the shot because they know he doesn't want to shoot the ball. That's okay if he's the only non shooter on the floor, but most nights he's out there with Nurk, Justise, Drew etc. etc. He doesn't have to be a great shooter but as a perimeter player you need to at least be willing to shoot.

Yeah if he continues we will need to start Sharpe at SF when Dame and Ant return because teams will completely drop off him. Its crazy because he had some monster games last year. Is it the yips? If so where did it come from and why? He was balling last year. He’s passed up soooo many open threes which if he just converted at his last years rate we would have won even more. We probably get the game against the Griz eg.

I love Hart as well but he’s playing his way to 6th man if he keeps it up because he’s already causing the lane to get increasingly clogged with his man falling back.

Not sure why he doesn’t but Keon is looking like a nice cheap replacement for him. I like Hart a lot but I like the idea of Sharpe in the starting lineup next season and not spending 20 mil a season on a redundancy. I actually wonder if Keon’s development means it’s more likely Hart is traded in season.

It is odd. When he was our primary guard last year with both Dame and Ant out, he seemed to have some really explosive scoring nights on good efficiency. Looking at bballreference, he averaged over six attempts at 37%. That's pretty respectable. This year he's turned into Evan Turner. I love everything else that he does. Maybe he knows he's expending his energy on defense and hustle and would rather set other guys up. But something about it is working so I'm hesitant to petition for change.

My guess is he's trying to find his role on this years team and he is seeing that it's the glue guy.

His usage will go up because it's only been 8 games lol.

Josh Hart Jerami Grant Justise Winslow and Nurk close passing lanes and driving lanes...teams have to shoot jumpers against us most of the time...Hart is doing what I hope Gary Payton does...giving us a pt of attack defender....I'm glad he's not jackin' up 3s he's not comfortable shooting because after he passes it off, he'll go get the rebound....the dude rebounded his own free throw miss....how often do you see guys that hungry?

Keon and Josh have an agreement. Josh doesn't shoot a ton and can dribble, Keon shoots a ton and can't.

I don’t mind him being passive and trying to setup his teammates. But at least keep them honest

He needed to step up and shoot tonight. Blazers lacked open looks in that B2B

He’s the second coming of Simmons. I understand knowing your role when the team is healthy. But with Dame/Ant out and Grant struggling, Hart should’ve done more. He can score 20+. He turned down shots AND layups. It was maddening.

He’s been worse than passive. He’s actively turning down scoring opportunities like he’s Kobe Bryant in Game 7 vs the Suns. It’s deliberate and bad for the team.

I don't know, but our guys need to go the basket with more conviction.

tend to think he's exhausted after his effort on defense and rebounding.

He had some big scoring games last year but maybe he's a rhythm guy, in order to build confidence he needs to shoot a lot of shots and he knows he can't take them now that we have Dame, Simons, Grant, Sharpe etc

I feel like he has not been the same since coming back from the concussion protocol. Maybe has some other nagging injury also? I understand why he hasn't attacked the basket as much with Lillard and Anf out, cuz other teams are packing the paint. I think making those baskets used to fire him up. I wonder also if he thinks he should be bringing the ball up court more often?

That’s not that it though. He expends energy to get open and then passes.
