I am guessing Neil Olshey is waiting for July 9th for the official date to sign players, but if he intends to offer contracts to RFA's or make any sort of trades why is waiting until then important? Would tipping your hand early allow other teams to make a better deal? I can understand that in a trade proposal, but when dealing with Restricted Free Agents the player has to agree to go to the team making a offer. so fans what's your theory for the lack of movement in the Blazers front office?
Why offer big contracts and overpay for role players? We should suck and get our young guys talent and then use our capspace to adsorb bad contracts people want to get out of by offering us picks.
No sense signing players for the sake of signing players. I get that the off season hasn't exactly been sexy, but our best asset the next year or so is flexibility.
Not sure why you would think he's sitting on his thumbs. He could be working trades or negotiating with agents as we speak. If Olshey is done, he would have already come out and said so. Obviously that is not the case right now.
http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterocke...rk-cuban-for-free-agency-comments/#32413101=0 The NBA has fined Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban for commenting about the team’s agreements with DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthews during the league’s free-agent moratorium. NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the penalty, which ESPN.com reported Tuesday was for $25,000. Teams can agree to deals with players during the moratorium, which lasts from July 1-8, but can’t comment specifically until deals can be signed on July 9. They can only say they plan to sign the players once the moratorium is lifted.
Generally it's important to not show your cards before placing a bet. I'd be surprised if Neil is even sleeping he's working so hard.
No reason to play your hand on rfas yet since you can't sign them, and Joe Johnson is really the only big 1 year contract worth absorbing, and the Nets don't have anything to package with him since they're all out of picks and young guys besides the one we traded to them. The remaining non restricted free agents aren't that interesting unless you want Jeremy Lin either.
There's not THAT many options out there. And I mean, what do you want him to do? Get marginal role players who would make us better to the point of finishing 8th-11th in the West? Do you want some great young guy who we could develop? Well, they cost something, typically older players who can make an immediate impact on whatever team wants to contend, or else another rebuilding team would develop that player themselves. We're kinda stuck in a lot of ways.
The moratorium isn't keeping him from making or announcing a trade. We have seen several trades announced that will go down at 12:01 am. I assume he is doing what Neil does...
People need to chill out about Olshey. He's done a damn fine job considering the mountains of misfortune that come with managing the perpetual train wreck that is the Portland Trail Blazers. Adding Afflalo was a good move. In hindsight fuck that guy, but at the time it was setting us up for a deep run. There was no reason to trade LMA before that fateful March evening. He gave every indication of staying, including playing though that thumb injury. I was at the moda center the night he returned against the Wizards. Not a person in that stadium chanting "mvp!" that night would have ever dreamed he would leave. The team was looking golden, even with RoLo cast clapping in the corner. Then with one achilles everything went to shit, and then that useless trade blew out his shoulder and that was all she wrote. The Ltrain turned into a derailed yellow line max faster than you could say first round exit. Even with the fucktastrophe that has happened in rip city the past several months, I still trust NO to take us forward into the next era. Patience is a virtue for a reason my friends.
I may very well be wrong, but I am not sure if he is planning on doing anything else this year except sign a couple guys off the summer league squad to one year contracts. I think he wants to put us in the lottery this coming season. It's possible that he is aiming for the 2017 free agent class.
What trades are those? All "trades" I heard of happened and most will not require the July 9th to solidify. Maybe one of the trades involve a sign and trade with a restricted? How many of those have you heard?
No I'm asking an honest question here. With the way our team was blind sided, I'm sure Olshey doesn't want shit leaked until the deal is done. Nothing wrong with that
