Wilson overpowers in batting practice

    "Closer Brian Wilson is ready to pitch, and for now his space on the shelf will be filled by Matt Cain.

    Wilson threw an impressive and entertaining batting practice at Scottsdale Stadium on Thursday, overpowering Aubrey Huff, Freddy Sanchez, Mark DeRosa and Andres Torres. His balky back looked fine. His arm looked even better.

    After shooting one fastball past Huff, Wilson yelled, "You're late." Huff's response was unprintable. But the first baseman was so impressed with Wilson's stuff that he joked, "I'm starting to question whether he was really hurt."

    Pitching coach Dave Righetti said that if Wilson's body responds well over the next two days, he will make his Cactus League debut against Seattle on Sunday.

    Cain, meanwhile, said he was not overly concerned with the elbow inflammation that developed after his first start Sunday, though he skipped Thursday's scheduled start and has not touched a baseball in four days. That leaves his next turn in doubt as well, with manager Bruce Bochy saying, "We'll have to adjust when he throws next.""
