The Portland Winterhawks got a shutout from Mac Carruth as they took Game 1 of their first round playoff series by a score of 4-0 over the Everett Silvertips Saturday at the Rose Garden in front of 8,363 fans.

With 32 saves on 32 shots, it was the first career postseason shutout for Carruth, and the first Winterhawks playoff shutout since April 7, 2006, in Game 1 of a second round series against Vancouver.

The Winterhawks opened the game with three goals in the in the first 8:07 of the first period, starting with Riley Boychuk putting home a rebound on a two-man power play at the 4:46 mark, followed by Brendan Leipsic with a seeing-eye backhand on a shot from the high slot at the 7:26 mark.

Then just 41 seconds after Leipsic's goal, the Winterhawks were killing a penalty when Ryan Johansen stole the puck at his own blueline and went down the ice on a breakaway, beating Everett netminder Luke Siemens with a shorthanded goal to give the Hawks the early 3-0 lead, a score that would hold through the end of the period.

After a scoreless second period, Brad Ross scored at the 12:28 mark of the third to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead, which would stand as the final.

Johansen finished with three points with a goal and two assists, with two points apiece from Boychuk (one goal, one assist) and Nino Niederreiter (two assists).

The Winterhawks fired 45 shots at the Silvertips, including a 19-3 advantage in the first period, with Siemens making 41 saves. The Hawks were 1-5 on the power play and a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill.

The two teams hit the ice tomorrow night at 5 p.m. at the Rose Garden for Game 2 of the series.
