Soon after the Wizards learned they came up short in the sweepstakes to land Al Horford, they pivoted to free-agent center Ian Mahinmi and secured him on a four-year deal for $64 million, league sources told CSNmidatlantic.com on Saturday.

Mahinmi, a 6-11 center, had the best season of his career in 2015-16 as the starter for the Indiana Pacers with 9.3 points on 58.9% shooting and 7.1 rebounds. The Pacers were a playoff team as a No. 7 who pushed the No. 2 seed Toronto Raptors to seven games.

In seven previous seasons he was a backup, inlcuding for the 2011 NBA championship Dallas Mavericks who upset the Miami Heat. Mahinmi played spot minutes behind Tyson Chandler then and has improved significantly since.
