There are only 10 days until the trading deadline, which is more than enough time for Layden to orchestrate Sprewell's unceremonious exit from New York. Of course, Layden is no fool and therefore the Knicks president is not in any rush to trade his best player unless he gets an All-Star caliber player in return. That's because if dealing Sprewell turns out to be a disaster, James Dolan, the Garden chairman who wants Sprewell gone, is not going to blame himself. It's Layden's head and reputation that are at stake. A bad deal involving Sprewell threatens to set the Knicks further back. But if you go by his history, Layden trading deadline, not blowing it up. Nine years ago as general manager in Utah, Layden made his best trading deadline deal, getting Jeff Hornacek from Philadelphia. Hornacek became a valuable third wheel playing alongside Karl Malone and John Stockton and helped the Jazz reach the NBA Finals in 1997 and '98. During those same years, Layden tried to trade for Derek Harper and Rony Seikaly but both players turned down the opportunity to spend four months in Salt Lake City.
